What can I do to scare away a hawk?

My English Lab scared a GIANT hawk away and I have not seen it again. My chickens are in a dog run (large) to keep the dog form getting at them and I do have netting on the top of the run but a Hawk was trying just the same...perched in a tree to get at my chickens until the 65 pound dog ran...

    When to integrate younger birds?

Hi Chicken Lovers, I found that my rooster will on occasion get the adult birds off of the little ones. He does not do it as often as I would like however and I am concerned about the youngest birds in my flock. I give them all room (they are in a large dog kennel run) and 3 outdoor feeding...

How to give them oyster shell

Since I have mixed the older babies with the adults the adults are eating the organic grower feed instead of their layer food. The only difference I can see in the feed is 2% more protein and less calcium (in the grower). I put grit and oyster shell outside now for them as they are ignoring...

    frustrated

Just saw what you have been going through. So sorry to hear what a commotion you had just to even find out what was wrong. AHHHH when our littel ones (at any age) are sick...it is hard. Seems the worst is behind you both now and I hope for the best.

    Icelandic Rooster and Hen

This is Buddy and Teddi. They are Icelandics. She lays eggs the most often and while they are smaller than the Java eggs I get, they are just as delicious and once cracked open, seemingly the same size as the rest of my eggs. Buddy is a bit too much for me to handle in a backyard flock and...

    How often to clean coop?

I scoop the top stuff daily (sometimes I confess it takes two days) but clean it out every few months - Over the winter they say it will sort of compost and if I scoop the fresh top stuff it does not stink. I use a kitty litter scoop and the shavings fall through and the poop goes on my compost...

What kind of shoes do you wear out to the chickens?

My crocs - they wash easy - I use them for all my garden chores like scooping dog poop too. Any mud or other things dry on them and scrape off easily and they wash easy too!

    Rooster

Thank you for such a warm welcome - My rooster quieted down again - not sure what was up with him. Hope to have some pictures of my birds up soon. I think he is just going through adolescence.

    Rooster

Hi I have been reading BYC for a short while as I am new to chickens. Boy people do not know what they are missing that do not have chickens. Anyway I have 5 hens (4 javas and 1 Icelandic) and one icelandic rooster. They may start laying sometime in September. My rooster has just started...
