On the more specific nutrients like amino acids and vitamins I can't speak here but I think your feed is definitely lacking in a few of them, perhaps adding more grain and variety of ingredients can help with that.
Hello there! I am not yet an expert on everything but I do also mix my own feed and try to so some research on all the ingredients before adding them to my mix. Oats can apparently start blocking nutrient absorption when you add too much so I would not go higher than 10% of the feed consisting...
Thank you very much! Right now I have very few hens that are laying because of it becoming winter here and a lot of them still going through a bit of molting (and I suspect protein has been too low for them to keep laying now) but in the summer we easily cook 10-30 eggs a week for all the...
I am an orpington breeder and I've noticed that they need extra protein than other chickens so the higher I can raise it the better (aiming for 18% but my current mix seems to be around 16%) and then I also have Pekins who I breed with and my mixed flock that has all kinds of chickens and ages...
I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and the only feed available here is a single brand of layer pellets that I don't like it all, it has only 15% protein, the chickens hate it, very expensive for what you're getting and the bags easily lay at the feed store for months losing even...
Yesterday I wanted to update everyone showing photos of how her eyes were slowly improving but when I went out to go take them while having her eat and drink water I noticed she was incredibly weak and then she ended up passing away a bit later in the day which I sadly expected to happen after...
I’m in Southern Africa
I’ve done quite a lot of research on the virus and vaccination against it so I do pretty thoroughly know how to treat and deal with it but this however is a far more severe case than any I’ve really read about or seen before so I came here for some extra help and advice...
Thank you much for the help! She sadly isn’t inside because I have a brooder in my bedroom and some chickens that constantly come inside so she’s placed in an empty enclosure I had with another hen who has a less severe case of it. I go out every few hours to help her get some food and water and...
Going to a vet is not really an option for her as the one in town does not like dealing with chickens and has very little knowledge on them anyways but if a specific treatment I can not do myself is needed I can definitely hear if he’ll be willing and able to help with this.
I’ve been away for a few days each week and when I got home I saw that some of my chickens have been infected with fowlpox, on my hen Marnie specifically there were maybe 3 or 4 tiny scabs and yellow bumps collectively and one very close to the eye, I carefully applied iodine to them all and had...
Thank you so much for the reply! They’re not completely fine yet but the coccidiosis medicine is the first thing that has helped so far and shown some more effects now. I’ll definitely try your tea recipe next and while it possibly won’t cure them either it seems good for them and the immune...
My hen Minnie didn’t want to take care of her chicks anymore so I brought them inside completely unknowingly they had respiratory issues. Had them in there just for a day before taking them to stay outside but it’s past a month (probably almost 2) later and I’m still completely unable to get it...
Thank you very much for the help! I thought separation would probably the best solution here but the fact that they’re getting along so well and raising all the others chicks together with no issues made me a bit uncertain wether that’s what I should do and for the for first 2 years or Sparkle’s...
I have 2 bantam hens named Glitter (splash) and Sparkle (blue). They’ve been brooding for weeks now and nothing has hatched so when a few hatched in the incubator I tried sneaking 3 underneath the two hens but did an awful job and they saw them. Glitter did not care and happily accepted the 2...
