This was my 2nd ever case of dealing with it where the previous one was over 2 years ago but I’m definitely adding a calcium to my chicken medicine cabinet for in case!
I got calcium tablets from the neighbours!! :) unfortunately don’t know their dosage and I can’t find a matching version of it on the internet (called vitacal I think, couldn’t see properly unfortunately) but I broke one into smaller pieces and am slowly giving them to her one by one
I’m about to try massaging again so maybe there’s hope now if the previous very short one managed to get something done, the egg is now also sitting closer down the tract than this morning when I started treating it! Sadly none of the poultry vitamins I have on hand currently contain calcium so...
A few minutes ago I tried massaging the egg out again and some very stinky liquid poop came out which is probably more of a good than bad thing here I guess :)
I’ve searched through the cabinets and couldn’t find any except my prescription 50 000IU vitamin D supplements that definitely won’t do lol. Both pharmacies in town have already closed for the day due to it being a public holiday and I have no form of transportation to the grocery store someone...
Yesterday I noticed me pekin hen sitting very still and strangely outside through the window but didn’t think much of it and assumed she was probably just napping and when I went out at night to check on them she was in the coop on her usual sleeping place. This morning she was just sitting in...
Thank you for fixing my mistake! I was not aware of the roosters needing 2 copies part. There’s so much to learn about genetics!! Whenever I think I finally understand something I find out there’s more to it lol.
Lavender is recessive and requires 2 copies to be expressed. It dilutes black and so does chocolate, if you’re crossing lavender to anything other than lavender you get black (there’s lots of exceptions but they don’t matter here because both parents are black under the dilution genes)...
I see the rest of my message didn’t send so I’m retyping it now.
I quite like the idea of the seed mats and pinning them up kind of diagonally so there’s different heat intensities for the chicks to choose which I think that could work pretty well!! However this is my first time hearing of a...
anywhere between 30-70 chicks at a time but I am downscaling this year so let’s say 40 chicks between 1-6 weeks old (my pekin babies can take up to 8 to be feathered enough to stay outside) but ideally of course I’d like to have 2-3 brooders set up instead of 1 this year. Currently the weather...
Just had my brooder caught on fire *once again* and fill the house with smoke because my lovely cats knocked it over this time. Definitely my fault for not being able to secure it today while setting it up but still awful and I’ve always had paranoia about a heat lamp starting a fire or...
On the more specific nutrients like amino acids and vitamins I can't speak here but I think your feed is definitely lacking in a few of them, perhaps adding more grain and variety of ingredients can help with that.
Hello there! I am not yet an expert on everything but I do also mix my own feed and try to so some research on all the ingredients before adding them to my mix. Oats can apparently start blocking nutrient absorption when you add too much so I would not go higher than 10% of the feed consisting...
Thank you very much! Right now I have very few hens that are laying because of it becoming winter here and a lot of them still going through a bit of molting (and I suspect protein has been too low for them to keep laying now) but in the summer we easily cook 10-30 eggs a week for all the...
I am an orpington breeder and I've noticed that they need extra protein than other chickens so the higher I can raise it the better (aiming for 18% but my current mix seems to be around 16%) and then I also have Pekins who I breed with and my mixed flock that has all kinds of chickens and ages...
I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and the only feed available here is a single brand of layer pellets that I don't like it all, it has only 15% protein, the chickens hate it, very expensive for what you're getting and the bags easily lay at the feed store for months losing even...
Yesterday I wanted to update everyone showing photos of how her eyes were slowly improving but when I went out to go take them while having her eat and drink water I noticed she was incredibly weak and then she ended up passing away a bit later in the day which I sadly expected to happen after...
