    Chicks pipping at wrong end

Okay, I rated the eggs from 1-5 before placing them. 1 being the best quality, 5 being the most porous. One of the two that pipped normally, I rated a 1. The other, I rated a 2. So high quality eggs, very little in the way of porousness. Of the 5 that pipped wrong, two were rated at 2, one...

    Chicks pipping at wrong end

Interesting theories! They were not shipped eggs, I gathered them myself and handled them extremely carefully. I did candle them before lockdown, and the air cells seemed normal size. However, initial candling did show several of the eggs were more porous. I'll have to compare my notes (I...

    Chicks pipping at wrong end

Update: 4 total have hatched, with another 2 still working on it. Two were properly positioned, the rest have all pipped at the wrong end. All of the chicks seems pretty large to me, as well. Genetics, maybe, and they get too big to turn properly in the egg? I don't think my temp was too...

    Chicks pipping at wrong end

Okay, so today is hatch day! We set 11 eggs. One was unfertilized, one was an early quitter. The rest have developed well. Only last night, one of the eggs pipped at the wrong end. This morning, she hatched without any problems - and she's gigantic. Like.. head brushing the top of the...

    Utah!

Thanks, but we ended up losing her last night. She turned out to have several things wrong - we're pretty sure she was blind, for one. Which might have been do-able, but we also couldn't get her to eat or drink anything successfully. Every time she swallowed, she acted like she was...

    Utah!

Hey everyone! We're finally back to cuddling our girls again, after my daughter got sick last year and wasn't allowed to be near any animals (or hay/dirt/etc) for 9 months. Thankfully, other volunteers at the offsite place we keep our coops at took care of our birds. Now that we're back at...

    Black leghorn + Silver-laced Wyandotte = ?

I have my black leghorns all safely separated from the rest of the (mixed) flock for the next month, and then will set a few eggs. However, I've left my silver-laced Wyandotte hen in with the group, because she is sweet and gets along well with all of the blacks. Her eggs are easy to tell...

    Utah!

Heber City allowed chickens in 2009, but Rios are prohibited. I keep mine off site at a local petting farm, and do volunteer work in exchange for the space to put my coop and run. I go daily and take care of all of the farm's 40 or so chickens and ducks, plus the baby chicks in the nursery...

    Night Temps for Baby Chicks

We have ours outside from about 4-5 days old. They are in 2'w x 4'l x 3'h cages with solid sides, top, and bottom, and wire mesh front/back. Then that whole arrangement is under shelter on top and 3 sides to protect from wind. They also have a heating plate in the cage, thatis adjusted weekly...

I swore I was done for this year, but....

My daughter loves, loves, LOVES the Ayem Cemani breed. And this morning, an ad went up in our local online classifieds from someone living only 30 minutes away that was selling a couple of 8 week old pullets. So, off we went to look. And came home with the two pullets and an 8 month old...

    Egg position on Day 18?

Okay, I'll try to explain clearly. Although we all have the flu here, so.. that may be a losing battle ;) If you stand the egg up with the air cell to the top, and the pointy end down, the air cell will not go straight across. It will be rather diagonal, with one side higher than the other...

Topic of the Week - What is the purpose of your flock?

My daughter and I do volunteer work at a local farm animal rescue/petting farm, and are highly involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm. Our main flock there is a mishmash of rescued chickens of all kinds, around 40 or so of them. Lots of surrendered roosters, and we get perhaps 2...

    LITTLE GIANT INCUBATOR TIPS

During my recent hatch, my new LG circulated air incubator was off by as much as **9 degrees**(!!) in opposite corners of the bator. The 6 eggs I had in the very center, right beneath the fan did okay, but I really really REALLY was not happy with the temperature variance throughout the whole...

    Help for a bad leg

Sounds like it could possibly be a slipped tendon? I've never treated that one, but Google has some ideas on how to successfully treat. Good luck, hope you can get it figured out!

Ugh, eggtopsy gone wrong, SO upset!

We have named her Miracle, and she is now moved out of the incubator in my dining room and into the outside brooder with the rest of the chicks, where she seems to he perfectly happy. I'll be glad to finally get a full night's sleep!
