I painted the inside of my coop with a good exterior paint so that I would be better to clean. I didn’t want any of the wood to absorb smells, etc. But I agree with others about ventilation. Could you get a hygrometer and see what it is inside the coop vs outside?
I have zero waste PVC feeders and I mean ZERO waste. Well, minus the bit that I spill when filling. But I’m getting better! It took some tweaking, mind you. They still scratched out a ton of feed with the first iteration. Now it’s perfected AND I can fit and entire bag of feed in my setup (such...
We’ve had a warm fall here, but I know that won’t last very long! I won’t be adding heat into my coop, since it normally only gets to -25C/-30C for a few week periods. But thats not prolonged. It’s not insulated either, but very sturdy and draft proof with aThere’s lots of ventilation, which I...
Hi! So the breed of my birds have been called into question, and I’d like to get some more opinions! Since I had seen so many people getting Easter Eggers passed off as Ameraucanas here, I wanted to be extra careful. I purchased a dozen hatching eggs from a lady for $70 (CAD mind you). She told...

Hello!
I’m processing my first chickens tomorrow and I have one that I’m on the fence about. I certainly don’t want to process them if they’re a pullet! I’m leaning towards a cockerel, but their brother has such a bright red comb and is crowing like crazy (you can see his comb in the very...
I haven’t posted in so long, but here’s an update on our coop adventure! We went with conventional framing due to simplicity and strength. The pallets would’ve been a nightmare and so much more work.
To start, there are 6 posts with concrete, with 2x6 joists framed under OSB. Here we have it...
I went the mama heating pad route because I already had one on hand and I’m brooding right against my house so the decreased fire risk is appreciated. My chicks have been loving it! It’s a 12”x18” (approx) and there’s plenty of room for my 21 chicks. They settle down at night and I don’t hear...
