1 week old Chick dropped dead.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! I’ve thought of everything you mentioned. Only nine chicks so plenty of room. She had grown quite a bit so I know she was eating and drinking. I’m thinking heart too. She looked like she just dropped. All the others are just fine. So I have to realize it’s...

1 week old Chick dropped dead.

Thanks for responding. She didn’t seem to be failing to thrive. She was one of the bigger chicks. I’ll watch for coccidiosis. Other than bloody stools what should I look for? I’ve never had it in any of my flocks.

1 week old Chick dropped dead.

We’ve hatched chicks for years. We hatched 25 chicks over the last month in two hatches. Everything has been fine with the first hatch. We know how to properly care for chicks. We came home after being away a couple of hours and one of the week old checks was dead in the brooder. She looked...

    Tape worm in egg??

I cracked an egg this morning into a heated pan and I was shocked to see a huge worm like thing in the egg white. It was about 1/4” wide and 4-5” long. It seemed to be alive but I think it was moving because the pan was hot and the egg white was jiggling in the heat. I was so grossed out I just...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

Thanks. He’s getting very strong and antsy in that indoor coop. He needs to be back on the barn coop. We’ll take it slowly.

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

Went to the vet again. A different vet this time. The senior person. They sedated him and examined his eye. She came back and said there was no more debris in the eye, the infection seemed to be gone but that his cornea had been perforated and she doubted he would ever restore his vision in that...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

We went ahead and made another appointment with the head vet tomorrow morning. I did get a call from the vet who worked in his eye last week and it almost seemed like she didn’t believe me that we got a piece of wood out. She said maybe he got it in there after she looked in his eye. I said he’s...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

My husband wants to call the vet and tell her that the day after we were in there for her to look at his eye he pulled a 1/4” piece of wood chip out of his eye. That he thinks there is still something in there and we’d like to bring him in again to see what else is still in there. We hope she’d...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

I might be able to get them from the avian vet who treated him (who didn’t find the wood chip). 😡

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

We’ve been keeping up 2 400 IU capsules E a day. The food supplement the vet gave us has selenium. I crunched up a hazel nut which is a good source too. We’ve been thinking the swelling of the eye both inside and out of the head has to be putting pressure on the brain. It’s down a lot but it’s...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

We’ll here we go again. The cockerel was doing so well this morning we decided to carry him out and put him in the coop with his two hens for a short visit. He had been eating and drinking the whole day before. He hadn’t put his head down and rolled in two days. When we put him down in the...

    Cockerel can’t raise his head

He seems stronger today. He’s slept several times with his head tucked under but not in the ground. He seems to be eating constantly. But we never see him drunk and there are no food kernels in his water. If I put A bowl under his chin while holding him on my lap, he’ll suck water up. But he...
