If you still have the chicken with the prolapse, do an author search on me, & see what I did with my hen when she had a prolapse. She felt fine, like yours, but I wanted to keep the area clean & "doctored up". The problem has never returned, & it's been 6 months.
If you still have the chiken, do a search on Prolapsed Vent. I went thru it last summer & all turned out ok!! It has never come back, & she's fine! I put my info on this website for anyone to have when needed.
Beth,
Maybe she has a prolapsed vent. I put info on my experience with it on this website. I haven't had any problem with it reoccuring since, & I caught it just in time!
I just noticed your post about the prolapsed vent. My hen had that a few months ago, & I have put the info on my experience on this website.
My hen had a little bit of the secretion you mentioned, but it was summer & I was able to gently hose it off in the yard every day. It must have been...
Sounds like a prolapsed vent, & I went thru it a few months ago with a hen.
I separated her, cleaned her vent gently with water, then put Preparation H cream on it (not the ointment--too gooey & greasy) 2 or 3 times a day. I gently pushed the prolapse in & up every time. It didn't seem to...
My hens are 1 1/2 & 2 1/2 years old. The egg production has drastically gone down in the last 2 months for me too. Nothing has changed, & the weather is a bit cooler in my part of Texas, so I don't think it's the heat. I just need to accept that my girls are getting old!
My hens occasionally did that too. I let them out or made them get out twice a day to eat, run around, & poop. If anything was in the nest, I just cleaned it up. The eggs were usually not too dirty.
Keeping her inside & quiet is good. Keep the wound clean! I'd use Neosporin on it. Does it need a stitch? Does it open up when she moves? I'd be worried about infection.
My hens always pick out a chick or 2 to pick on! It can be vicious! One time I put the poor victim in with another hen & her babies. I don't know what she saw in the chick to make her do that. She just didn't want it in with her & the others!
My hen's vent got sort of "crusty", but I softened it as best I could with water & the cream. It finally just all disappeared. She never pecked at it. Sounds like you're doing the right things!
I didn't take my hen to the vet (see earlier post above).
No, it didn't stay in. I pushed it in & up gently each time I cleaned her, & I thought it would NEVER stay in. And yes, it all came back out after each poop. But I cleaned her up every morning & evening with water or witch hazel...
