Possible treatment for Mites and Lice??

Interesting! I will have to give this a try. After the county fair last year, we took some ducks and about a month later I found lice on the chickens. It wasn't a bad infestation, but enough that I used 7-dust and dusted all the birds on the place. The fair is the only place I thought of that...

    Tip of the Day....

Never gather eggs and put them in your coat pocket before putting wood in the outdoor woodstove. You end up with a gooey mess when you put your hand in your pocket!

Broody Silkie then another - split eggs, is that ok?

I have done that too with two broody silkie hens. They both ended up hatching chicks and raised them together without any problems. They took turns sitting on the eggs, when one got up to eat or drink the other would take the eggs and roll them under her. It should be fine!

Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?

My kids asked me this very question yesterday when we were watching the news reports and the many specials on 9-11. My kids were both small; my son was 3 and my daughter 2 on that day back in 2001. We were at Minot Air Force Base, my husband was working and the kids and I were home. We just...

    Best broody breed?

Quote: This is VERY true! I haven't had a silkie egg in weeks, 6 of my girls are boody! I have had a heck of a time with them this summer. I let two raise some babies but as soon as the chicks were 4 weeks old they went broody again.

How would you put a roof on Chain-Link?

I have a roof over my Silkie pen. I have done two different things. The first one I made of PVC, I made a frame that went up in a peak and the sides were secured to the kennel panels by clamps. I attached a heavy duty tarp secured to it by zip ties. The problem I had was there were not...

What to do about the heat??

We are hotter than normal here, heat index of 115. It has been miserable for all of us, human and animal. I give fresh cold water several times a day and overflow their water bowels (making mud for them), same for the ducks. Their swimming pool has been refreshed everyday during this heat...

Who keeps a chair in or near the coop?

I have a bucket that I turn over and sit on! Of course that is when I am not sitting on the lawn as they free range. I love watching all the girls, even the boys.

Duck - Show at the county fair question...

We have Saxony and Silver Appleyard ducks that are 13 weeks old right now and are very large. We can tell the males from the females by their feather coloring but the drakes do not have their full male color yet. The county fair is in two weeks and my kids really want to take a couple ducks to...
