    Feed for older, non-laying hens

Thanks everyone. Our hens will be 4 yrs old this spring - we'll see if they start laying again. It sounds like we should move to a whole flock feed or else a grower/finisher feed. Does this sound right?

    Feed for older, non-laying hens

Our hens have stopped laying - is it okay to continue feeding them their layer feed, since they like it? Or do we need to change to a different type of feed? Thanks in advance.

    electrolytes in water with deicer?

This is probably a dumb question, but I thought I should ask before doing it. We have older hens that we think would benefit from putting electrolytes in their 5 gal water container over the winter. However, we also have a submersible deicer from tractor supply (Farm Innovators cast aluminum)...

    Minnesota!

We're comtemplating a move to the twin cities area and want to bring our hens with us. We currently have 5 hens and a Wichita Cabin type coop. The coop's roofline is 7' tall in front and 5' tall in back. I've been looking at different city ordinances, but thought it might just be easier to ask...

I like your summer run. It looks like you used pvc pipe for it. What did you use for the sides? It looks like some type of netting.

    Horizontal nipples--buckets keep cracking

Warming the plastic (on my next bucket) is an interesting idea. I'll try that. Thanks.

    Horizontal nipples--buckets keep cracking

I used whatever the instructions told me, but I'm not sure what size that was. What size did you use?

    Horizontal nipples--buckets keep cracking

This is the bucket we're using. https://www.menards.com/main/maintenance-repair-operations/janitorial/commercial-cleaning-supplies/buckets/century-container-5-gallon-food-safe-pail/0-307-05/p-1444426310665-c-7112.htm?tid=-5548146770272067571&ipos=11 I can't remember what size drill bit I used...

Problem with water system - what am I doing wrong?

We have a 5 gallon bucket with two horizontal water nipples for our watering system. It sits outside in the run and we use a de-icer in the winter. We've had this for almost two years now, and sometime during each of the past two winters, a vertical hairline crack has developed from one of the...

What kind of treats do you give when bitter cold?

We have cold hardy hens that survived -24F last winter just fine - our coop is insulated, but no supplemental heat. We're supposed to get another cold spell this weekend - close to -20 at night with daytime highs below 0. I think they'll be fine, but thought it would be nice to give them...

    Dealing with bumblefoot epidemic

I'm also really wondering about the "wait and see" approach, as three of our hens are showing no signs of any problem. Our son only found it on the other three by examining the rest of the flock after finding it on one. The one we did treat had a spot on the bottom of her foot and also the...

    Dealing with bumblefoot epidemic

No advice, but we're dealing with the same thing here - four out of six hens affected. However, it doesn't seem to be bothering any of them; they run around just fine. Our roosts are 2x4's with the square edges rounded off a little. I think we'll sand their roosts again just to see if that...

    Could this be bumblefoot?

Okay, thanks. Are eggs okay to eat when we've applied antibiotic ointment?
