Under a black light some eggs glowed orange, is that normal?

Button Eggs Coturnix I tried to google it, but I didn't find anything very quail specific. Just something about brown egg shells containing Protoporphyrin IX. I didn't have any brown chicken eggs to test, but I saw a very faint orange glow on some turkey eggs. Anybody know anything...

Chinese quail, question on white babies from non white parents.

I've had painted quail for about a year now, no white or pied. I've probably had 10 generations hatch since, most looked just like the parents. About 2 months ago I had 2 hatch that were blackfaced, pale colour and speckled. That was neat. Maybe a week after that I had two hatch that are kinda...

Just got a new hova bator 1588, digital. Need some answers.

Okay, I had a bantam golden sebright/ameraucana hatch today, right on time, so the standard and digital thermometers must be closer than the built in thermometer. I've got it running at 98.7f, the others shows the temp runs between 99.5 and 100.2. I'm not worried about it anymore, looks like...

Just got a new hova bator 1588, digital. Need some answers.

I used 2 thermometers, one analog, one digital, they both match at egg height. I turned down the bator to 98, and that's been keeping the temp between 99.7 and 100.2. I wondered if it's adjusted to estimate the temp in the bottom of the incubator. And no matter where I move the thermometers to...

Just got a new hova bator 1588, digital. Need some answers.

I tried to look through the other posts, but all I could find was about the one with switches. My pre-set temp was like 100, the read out shows bouncing between 99.7 and 100.2, so I was pretty thrilled. I put my turner in, put in my eggs, and put a thermometer on those. It pretty consistently...

    Snake problems

It's pretty easy to deter snakes, since they're very sensitive to sulphur. Just liberally sprinkle some around your pen and when he tastes the air with his tongue, he'll attempt to go around it. Just don't trap him inside. =) You should be able to obtain a small bag of yellow sulphur at a feed...

    Question on turning eggs

Bad news; I candled my pheasant eggs since they were a bit late hatching, saw nothing dark in the eggs. My other eggs did hatch, just not any pheasant. I guess I'm going to try to find somewhere to buy chicks instead.

New hatch, had 1 white/pale yellow - Coturnix

I thought I had a couple of these last year, but didn't get pictures then. Once he was dry, he was easy to pick out in a crowd. I love these quail, they surprise me all the time.

    Pink Quail?

Hmm, I used to crush them by hand and whirl them in the blender, but powdered or small bits didn't seem to matter when it was mixed in feed. I put them in a small butter bowl, use another butter bowl on top, then push down by hand, and sometimes with a jar for extra power. The other day, I just...

    Question on turning eggs

But they did hatch even while being turned? This wont be easy, but might be possible at least. Got another loop thrown at me; they sent en extra egg, but it's a reeves pheasant. If I'm not mistaken that'll need to be turned 3 days longer. This is going to take some juggling. lol

    Question on turning eggs

I had some guinea eggs hatch 4 or 5 days early once, so I hadn't yet stopped the egg turner, but they hatched anyway. I just ordered some red golden pheasant eggs, they're going to take about five days longer than my coturnix eggs. Question is, will my quail still hatch if the turner isn't...

    Pink Quail?

I'm in zone 8, no mangoes for me. lol Sounds like a cherry mango tree. Cherry mangoes are the best. IMO. Eggshells are pretty good when crushed. When my birds first started laying, I noticed some had fragile shells, did a little reading and came up with that solution. Some of the first eggs laid...

    Pink Quail?

Anytime I have a hatch, I save the egg shells and mash them up, mix them into the feed, seems to work pretty well. I use chicken egg shells from breakfast too. I've never used oyster shell, but I'm a cheapskate. lol None of my birds seem to like fruit very much, don't know why. Some times they...

    Pink Quail?

Right or wrong, I supplement the diet of my birds with all kinds of leftovers, a variety of vegetables and meats, everything made small enough for them to swallow easy. They really love boiled eggs. =)~ I've got about 100 cots, 18 painted buttons, 12 bantams, 2 chickens & 3 guineas, and they eat...

Some of my Japanese Coturnix, wild and red.

I really like the 4th picture. I think I've read that those are called italian quail. Not sure. That last picture looks a lot like 2 I have, dark range tux. I haven't been lucky enough to have any pale yellow hatched yet, may order some eggs to round out my collection of colours and style. =)
