Thanks. Her name was Felicia. Named from Ice Cube’s movie Friday. She was very sweet. Well, in the end. She was actually a really bossy boss of the flock until she got sick. “Bye, Felicia!”
I didn’t take pics because of the smell. I almost barfed and had to wrap it up quickly. I am much better...
Ah, that sounds familiar. Gosh, why didn’t my buzz phrase “tumor like cooked meat” bring anything up? thanks for the help. Just wanting to know a bit more about what happened to her!!
Hello, I just wanted to post this because I am not finding anything about it here or anywhere online. I have a 3 yo Golden Comet hen who I noticed was waddling with a very heavy abdomen. Suspected egg bound, but gave calcium and epsom salt soaks but no improvement. Still eating and drinking...
I would love to ferment the feed; thanks for the reminder!
I happened to have old stainless steel no-tip dog food bowls that I had to use one day out of desperation. They are perfect! Chickens can’t tip them, either, and if you only fill them halfway, they can’t bill out any feed! I’ve been...
Gramma Chick, I do worry that the pop door open down low may cause a draft in combination with the upper vents and window I open for ventilation. Does anyone think that would cause a draft on the roosts? Is anything low supposed to be open? I did think ventilation was okay on all sides above the...
I appreciate knowing it is hard to avoid minor comb frostbite at extremely low temps. Thanks for the hydro- / hygro- correction. I think I will remove the foam in the window since one foot above the roosts is good. You’re right; they definitely hunker. That’s a good chunk of ventilation space to...
Thank you, welshies. I would never try to win for the sake of winning. ;) I’m sure he and I both just want what’s easiest and best for the birds at this point! And it is minor, I think. Just tips or surface spots. The BR in the pic, if you can zoom in, is a good example of how they all look...
Thank you for your perspective, Welshies. And smseverson, I think opening all the top vents you can is the best bet. And if you see frost inside, that’s a good indicator of more ventilation being needed. I don’t have any glass in mine to check. Would frost form inside on the uninsulated wood...
Hello, thank you for taking the time to read this.
These are pictures of my coop. I live in Missouri in the US. Until recently, I thought I had enough ventilation in my coop. But, I have more birds now, and We have recently had our coldest temps in a while, down to -9 F overnight and down to 0...
I’m afraid I’m not sure exactly what to tell you, but I am so glad to see your post today! I was on the verge of writing my own because, as you say, even if you’ve read and thought a lot about it (as I suspect we both have), it can be confusing to apply the general guidelines to your specific...
I think someone told me to look at the bottoms of their feet. Jersey giant feet bottoms are green. And they have dark brown, almost black eyes. Don't think australorps do.
