We have our first broody hen, sitting on eggs in the coop. We figure there are probably about 10 eggs or so, can't get close enough to check without her going crazy. We are going to let her hatch out the eggs.
How long will it take for the eggs to hatch? We think she has been on the eggs for...
We also have a mouse problem, but have found the electronic trap is working great. It is battery operated. You put a little peanut butter in it, mouse walks in the opening and is electrocuted. Open the top and dispose of mouse, repeat. They are a bit more expensive (around $20), but can be...
We use pellets as well in a hanging feeder in their coop available 24/7. It is at chest level for easy access. They don't seem to waste much since we learned not to mix blackoil sunflower seeds in with their layer food. They would just knock out all the layer pellets to get at the treats...
We have an EE (Goldie) who has been laying for a month now, off and on. They have been green and small. Yesterday we went out to get eggs and there was a blue egg (medium size). Is it possible for an EE to start out with a green shade of egg and then be blue? This was definitely blue.

When we have had to rehome roosters we put an ad in Craigslist under farm and garden section. Normally list it for $5 so we get someone who actually wants a rooster and hopefully not a meal. We have been pretty lucky so far.

Our sweet Barnyard (some type of mix, maybe sex-link) passed away last night. She was going broody on Tuesday, wouldn't leave the next box until after we removed the eggs that afternoon. Put all the chickens to bed and after checking later in the night she was up on the roost.
Let them out...
We have a bantam cochin roo in with our large hens and he does just fine. He is actually quite good about finding food and calling the ladies over to it. He takes good care of them. He doesn't seem to have any trouble mating, but it can take a few tries before he is successful.

Need some help making sure Reddie is a girl. She is a Rhode Island Red and is 5 1/2 months old. She hasn't done anything that shouts out Rooster, but she has a couple tail feathers that are starting to concern me. Not the best pictures, but she is very shy and won't stay still for very long...
Thanks. I pretty much knew he was a rooster at about 4 weeks of age (my husband was in denial), but figured I'd wait it out to be sure. He was always the biggest of the chicks.
We have a pretty small flock (12 hens, 1 rooster Frank) so he will have to find a new home.
