    Candling for quality?

Cool thanks; I have seen similar charts/images but was curious as to whether this is something backyard flock keepers ever do, and if so what light they use etc. I don't know if my cell phone flashlight is strong enough or if there's a special (most likely expensive) light people use haha

    Candling for quality?

Hi there everyone, Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but just out of curiosity: Do any of you candle your eggs for quality? Like to see what grade they are (in the U.S., grade AA, A, or B)? If you do, how do you do it? What kind of light source do you use? Do you have any...

Suspected heat exhaustion, anything more I can do? Anything else it could be?

Thank you for the advice! About 3/4 of the entire yard is shaded, even in the height of the day. Temps here for the next several days are not supposed to get above low/mid 70s, so we're all happy for the reprieve. I'm working from home right now so I've set up my "office" on the patio so I can...

Suspected heat exhaustion, anything more I can do? Anything else it could be?

Update: My Chonky Chicky is back to her old self this morning! She started to perk up around 9pm last night and scarfed the rest of the egg I made her plus some watermelon. She was opening her eye more and flew from her perch that she'd been on all day to the back of my chair, chattering away...

The room she is in doesn't have good lighting and her left side is turned away from the light, but I did my best. The first photo is her right eye (normal). The middle is her left eye closed, and the last is her left eye open (for the split second I could get her to open it.

Also I should add: She can open the squinty eye if she wants to, for instance if she hears a sudden noise. There is no discharge/swelling/injury to the eye that I can see.

Not at this time of the day here but I can take her tomorrow if she's not showing improvement.

Hi all you wonderful chicken people. I have a chick that I suspect has heat exhaustion, but I wanted to run it by this awesome community since I have learned so much from you all recently: It has been hot here the past 3 days, with temps in the mid to high 90s and lows in the mid 60s. Humidity...

    New Chicks for Newbie Chicken-Parents

We picked up three chicks yesterday! They're settling in quite well, and we're doing our best not to be helicopter chicken-parents. We ended up with one blue Ameraucana, one Speckled Sussex, and one Barred Plymouth Rock. They took to the Brinsea heater plate very quickly, and are all eating and...

    Hi everyone!

There are a few we're considering that will be available on Saturday; I'm leaning toward a Rhode Island Red because I have a friend who's had chickens for a decade and they're her favorite. Also I'd like to try a Blue Copper Maran; I think they are beautiful and love the idea of dark brown eggs...

    Hi everyone!

Hi there! My name is Keri and I'm just getting started with backyard chickens. In fact, I don't even have any yet. We are planning on picking up 3 chicks this Saturday and I'm super excited. I've been dreaming of this project for many years and have been researching seriously for probably 18...
