    Seizures of some kind?

Hi there. We have a very reputable vet who has been treating chickens for decades and has treated many different animals at zoos during his career. He told us that “wry neck” is a bacterial infection in the ear called torticollis, and it should be treated with antibiotics. (He tested her blood...

    Extreme case of Wry Neck

Hi there. Just checking in to see how your hen is doing. Mine started with it this morning, and it is very distressing for all of us. She is inside and I am able to position her to eat by holding her. But I think she just gets exhausted and gives up. So I let her rest a while and try again. Were...

    Maintenance to avoid flystrike

I also finally am putting together a first aid kit. My husband was tearing around town trying to find vetermycin when she died.

    Maintenance to avoid flystrike

I agree. I’m about to examine my remaining three now. She’s always gotten a poopy butt in summer. She’s on the larger side. (Never feed table scaps and the only treats they get are grubs — promise!) I’m going to look up vent gleet so I can identify it in the future. Thank you so much for the...

    Maintenance to avoid flystrike

Hi friends. This is a sad post, but I hope it might help someone. We lost our 5-year-old head hen Sweet Tango today to a horrible and preventable condition called flystrike. I am reminding my chicken friends to check those fluffy butts and keep them clean, use fly traps around the coop and run...

    Grossly misshapen egg, squatting, screaming

Thanks for the advice, all. She was experiencing more and more distress, and we got her to a vet this morning. Unfortunately, the vet suspected egg yolk peritonitis, and poor girl was too far gone for treatment that would have resolved it. We sent her to the luxury chicken coop in the sky. I'm...

Oh probably around a year. Let me see if the wormer is has expired and if not, if I can get to the farmer's co-op today. Whew. Of course it has to happen on my busiest work day! Thanks!

On thought... Is it possible that she is egg bound, but still laying these tiny weird eggs? Could that be why they are oblong and yesterday's so misshapen?

Thanks! I am probably worried for nothing, but that one egg alarmed me 😂

I think they’re normal? It’s hard to tell with five girls who’s doing what.

That's a good point, Dottie! I usually do but took it away during the winter storms we had a month ago. I'll put some more out. Thanks!

    Grossly misshapen egg, squatting, screaming

Hi! My Dominique Rosie is 3 years old. Last week, she laid two very small eggs (in pic marked "last week's small egg"), what I'd normally call fairy eggs. She's just coming back into lay from the winter, so I chalked it up to that. Today she laid this bizarre egg shown below in the nesting box...

    WHO LAID THIS!?!?!?

What color are her feet? Cuckoo Marans have pinkish feet. Rocks have yellow feet. I have a Maran, a Rock and Dominique. I did not know who was who and what was what until someone here told me to look at the feet!
