Thank you both for this post. I have a broody hen with one egg and I am not sure it will hatch. I'm thinking I might put a day old under her if it doesn't. This helped! :-) I have approximately 48 hours til we know.
My vet said soft shells are VERY normal for the beginning and often the end of a laying season. I, too, have been getting a number of soft shells from my Sapphire Gem. She started out laying double yolks and a soft and now she generally lays a single yolk and then later 2 soft shells. She...
UPDATE:
Hi all,
My sweet girl died last month and the vet found a "weird" tumor situated right up next to her oviduct so there was no way she was able to lay anything. She saved the tumor to show me and it was odd. Very flat on one side, slightly rounded on the other. I thought she had...
My son is a bird trainer and will be helping me target train my new babies. He told me to teach them to poop in one spot but I laughed, however, I may talk to him about that as well.

I have sand in my coop and in a good portion of my run. The nest boxes have straw in them. If the girls poop on anything I pour sand on it to dry it out then use a litter box scooper to clean out all the poo every week or so.
Hi all,
My sweet little Priscilla hasn't laid one egg in 2019. She went through a light molt in December and stopped laying then. I believe I have given her ample time to begin laying again...:p. She will sit in the nest box at times but doesn't lay. She isn't laying elsewhere in...
I'm looking for a Speckled Sussex, maybe a Salmon Faverolle. I have an Ameraucana and a Lavender Orpington. I also am considering a Blue Lace Red Wyandotte or a Silver Lace Wyandotte. I would love each of my girls to lay different colored eggs so I know who is laying but I don't know that...
