I completely agree with you. This has been a mess for us. We got six pullets from someone the feed store recommended (he supplies them with chicks). Three of the six ended up getting sick. We got three of them looking good, but the other three never looked great (we separated them out). We...
We just picked up three pullets that are approximately 10 to 12 weeks. The one buff was sneezing a little and bit of runny nose, so we started them all on antibiotics (tetracycline in water). The other two are doing well but the one seems to peck at the water rather than drink it. She's not...
Just wanted to update on this. My chickens luckily did not get any frostbite. Their combs and waddles did get very red with the extreme cold (below zero), but I applied bag balm or Vaseline every afternoon. They got very dirty, but no frostbite.
Thanks for the advice. I put some cardboard up this afternoon, hopefully I will see a difference tomorrow morning. Plus I finished cutting out the matching triangle vent on the opposite wall. Last night the temp fell to -2. I left the coop door open but the curtain down to block any possible...
We thought a small house would be nice, they would keep each other warm. Now I'm thinking small space equals more humidity in this super cold weather. We may have to build something else...
Hoping the girls make it through this ok. They hate me handling them to apply bag balm to their comes...
We've been having a very cold spell (-9 lows, 12 highs). I started putting Vaseline on the combs and waddles yesterday morning and an hour before they went in the coop. This morning I noticed some black areas on their combs and waddles. The black areas are just here and there, not on the...
I'm in Colorado (near Denver) and we are in a very serious cold spell. This is our first year with chickens and I want to make sure I'm doing the right things for them. The last two mornings were -9 and -8 when I went out to let the chickens out. They both had a little frost on their backs...
I'm in Colorado too and in a serious cold spell. It was -9 when I got up this morning and it's only hit a high of 10 today. This is our first year with chickens so I'm learning as I go and have made a couple of mistakes I think. We had a flock of 3 but lost one last month (Mareks?). The other...
Thanks for all your help through this episode Kathy. I have really appreciated all the advice you gave me. I'm upset that I lost one of my chickens and feel a little to blame since I'm so new to this. She was my favorite too. She would almost purr when she young and was so curious. Her...
I was actually suspecting botulism when she first got sick. The symptoms do match what she had, but so do th Marek' s. Hopefully the others stay healthy. So here's a question for those who may know a little more about botulism....my chickens love to jump the short fence around my garden area to...
Unfortunately we had to cull our bird. She went from just the right leg being paralyzed to both legs and starting in her wings. She wasn't showing any signs of improving, just decline. We feel like it was Mareks disease. Now we are watching our other two birds to see what happens. We would like...
This is our first winter with our very small flock and I'm trying to figure out how to keep their water from freezing. Winters in Colorado can be very mild one day with temps in the 50s and highs in the single digits the next day.
My husband is thinking about running an extension cord the 100...

Just found this article about marek's on the backyard site. Very informative. It answered a lot of questions I had.
I bought the Poly Vi Sol vitamins and added it to her water and soaked some bread in it. She ate the bread one day but refused after that. I'm not sure how much of the water she drank. Also added some aspirin, but once again not sure how much she got. I put her in the grass for a bit this...
