Thank you so much. I'm going to take your advice and take the babies out. Any suggestions for the injured one? I don't know how bad it is. It's still alive, just not doing so well. :-(
If I put a dog crate in there and create her a new/separate nesting box, do you think she will reject it because it's new, or will she continue to lay on the remaining eggs and care for the new chicks?
I do think other hens may keep trying to come in and out of that one box. Two other eggs...
Well the first one is doing well so far. But the trampled one is not doing much, just breathing.
So should I just wait until the rest hatch or should I go out there and try to separate them now, since they've already started to hatch? I can see another chick has hatched but is laying behind...
Yes, it's the favorite box. I have 14 hens and 1 roo. We have 8 nesting boxes, but they only lay in a few boxes. So I shouldn't try to move her right now?
So we have a hen who's been sitting on 8 eggs and they are starting to hatch. I should have been more prepared, but I assumed the momma hen would take care of them if they hatched, and i really didnt think they would, and she unsuccessfully brooded before. Well, one hatched last night, which I...
Ugh. I have so many questions about this, and I know it's an older thread, but I have a rooster, unintentionally, and I don't know what to do about him. He is almost one year, an Americana. He was our first batch of chickens, and the day we got them, we were attached. We live within the city...
I'm so glad you posted this. I'm really new to chickens too, and we just lost one of our 7 wk old chicks to what I think was the neighbor's dog. We want to free-range in our fenced in yard and we've been giving them a little freedom each day, but a storm came barreling in and they didn't go...
Thank you all so much! This is very helpful information and the pictures really help!!! They are not of laying age, so I think I will just leave the nesting boxes we built out of the coop until the get a little bit older. Thanks again! :)
These might be silly questions, but we are very VERY new to raising chickens and our little chicks are just about old enough for their coop. We are converting a shed into a coop for them. We've built nesting boxes for them, but I'm a little confused on exactly what they need in a coop. When I...
Hello! My family (my partner and our two children) decided we would like to have fresh eggs and thus recently invested in two Americanas and two Rhode Island Reds. We are very excited about raising them, and are already enjoying getting to know their quirky personalities! They are only about...
