    What Gender Are These Chicks?

Are your predictions based on the comb alone, or is there something else you see?

    What Gender Are These Chicks?

We’ve got three chicks about 7 weeks old. The dad is a Buff Brahma Bantam, unsure of the mom for each. Just curious if anyone can tell gender at this point. Number 1 has the reddest comb and waddle and has been pretty noisy, but still just peeping. Number two is the most independent.

    First Egg from Jersey Giant

They eat an 18% layer mash and sometimes a little bit of scratch. And I have oyster shells out just in case they want a little extra calcium. Other than that they eat whatever they can find in the yard including grass, garden scraps, and bugs. They all seem very happy. I assume the eggs are...

    First Egg from Jersey Giant

One of our Jersey Giants layed her first egg today! What do you think of the coloring? Will she continue to lay them like this, or does it have to do with it being her first? The egg she hatched from was just a solid brown. Pretty cool though. If we get it wet the white disappears and then comes...

Nice, good to know. I’m kind of expecting eggs from her any day now then. Thanks everyone.

We have 4 Jersey Giants about 22 weeks old and none have started laying yet. This one has had a larger red comb and waddles for a week and a half now and the others don’t show any signs of turning red yet. It looks like a hen to me, but do you all think it could be a rooster?

    Loud Chicken

We have 10 chickens in total - 2 white leghorns, 2 brown sexlinks, 4 Jersey Giants, and 2 unknown. This past week we have had our first eggs and now we have both white leghorns and one brown sexlink laying and the eggs are amazing, nice thick shells and amazing dark yolk color. The behavior of...

Feed type for new layers and soon to be layers

Great info on the scratch, thank you for that. I only have hens and no chicks, so the layer mash should be fine. Are the oyster shells a must? The layer mash should have calcium in it already. Just curious.

Feed type for new layers and soon to be layers

We have 10 chickens all about the same age and two have started laying eggs in the last week. We have been feeding the Purina Layena layer pellets that I believe include oyster shells in the ingredients for about a month now. All the chickens seem happy and healthy with this feed. However, I...

Got our first egg this morning from one of our white leghorns (about 20 weeks old). The egg is a little smaller. Will the eggs get larger as the chicken gets larger? The leghorns are our smallest chickens right now, even though they started out as some of the largest chicks.

Yeah, we gave him away at about 8 weeks. So far it was our only boy out of 11.

The leghorns are our smallest by a lot which is interesting. And they weren’t really the friendliest chicks, but they are really warming up to us now. They will finally let us hold them. We really like them.

Good to know. The Columbian definitely has a different personality than the white one so it would make sense that they were different. Thanks. And man is that Columbian Wyandotte huge, she’s significantly bigger than the rest of the chickens and she just does her own thing, doesn’t really mingle...
