in a word? Mud. princess peach (in my av glaring at us all) is prone to mudball toes, which is kind of funny considering lydia deets (black hen behind her) has feathered feets and no issues aside muddy egg toes
i wear a k95 when i'm doing more than checking over the birds or filling their water. why?
because i didn't used to, because i didn't know better. my snot would be black with dust from the coop after cleaning with a kerchief over my nose. what is coop dust? mostly? its Poop Dust. why would i...
i haven't timed it but i know one of my hens takes a good half hour before committing to where she's gonna lay. and then rearranges all of the existing eggs. sometimes she'll scratch the coating on them in the process. she's a black copper dominant and definitely is the noisiest layer i have...
re: black birds allegedly being safer-
that only applies if you have befriended the local corvids. its not that the hawk thinks all black birds are crows/ravens and more that if they associate the area with corvids, they won't hang around as much because the local murder will come for them...
3rding or fourthing elevate the feeder, and for us, i put a big rubber pan under, it catches what they bill out and they tend to perch on that rather than trying to sit on the feeder itself. you can get anti perch cones for on top which also helps prevent it getting knocked over so easy.
i knew what to expect and even still, every now and then they'll just look so Flat that i'm like are you...ok? and then i get glared at and laugh at myself for forgetting its just dust bathing time
i jokingly refer to the first hour after the ladies are up as the exorcism of the eggs. one will announce that. she. will egg now. and then its a call and response. occasionally they'll hear our neighbor's hens and join in and vice versa. but yeah if you don't know whats up you'd swear they're...
i was planning on putting gorilla glue waterproof tape around the edge of the hardware cloth and then just using a sail needle to blanket stitch it to the existing fabric and if necessary, stitching it to the frame itself. part of why this pack and play got retired early is the lock got broken...
the main concern i have at this point in the year is how to adjust our ventilation during our winter doldrums, where it is very cold and very foggy for extended periods of time. humidity is well over 100% and the air does't move. do i throw the louvres under the peaks wide like when its raining...
our current is a foldable medium wire dog crate that was our midsize brooder. it comes in or goes out as needed. most recently it was used while 2 of our girls were drying out after a spa day to soak the clayballs off their talons. if its more than one bird for more than a few hours, i have an...
one of my girls can't make up her mind when or where to lay. some of its anxiety, she's the smallest of the lot and near the bottom of the pecking order. some of its someone higher up the order is already in the bestest nest box evar. i've got a wooden egg i use in winter when there's a chance...
