Breeding and Raising and Hatching of Barnyard Chickens!!!!!!!!!!

Pierre has now fathered three generations and the hens all love him. Chicks have been healthy and strong. I seem to always have several hens that are determined to be moms, though, and end up with less egg production. It's the fighting breed/game bird influence, I believe. It would also be nice...

Breeding and Raising and Hatching of Barnyard Chickens!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree. None of my five original hens was pure anything, but a few were naturally broody, probably because of their game cock blood. I've never had to buy another chicken over these five years, as despite my efforts to prevent, a mom will manage to hatch out a hidden clutch every so...

    Keeping Chickens Free Range

if you hate looking at a dead tree, but don't want to cut it down because the birds love it, you could plant a flowering vine next to it, or better yet, something edible like grapes or blackberries. It will be a win/win for you and the birds, and maybe the bees, too.

Large shrubs are good for chicken cover - you could go to your local nursery and find some (mulberries for instance) that would make good forage for them and you too! I have come to the point where if I going to plant something and take care of it, it's going to be something edible.

Making Sure Your Rooster Knows You Are Top Dog

I agree with Donrae. My mature rooster was the largest from a brood raised by one of my hens about three years ago. The hens come close to me for treats, but I do not pick them up to cuddle or pet. I move slowly through the group so they don't feel threatened. These chickens (we live in...

    Keeping Chickens Free Range

Three weeks ago I wondered if refrigerated eggs put under a broody hen would hatch - so far it looks like the answer is no, unless it just makes them late. Three un-refrigerated eggs under a different hen did hatch successfully yesterday. It's her first time, so she's a little nervous with...

Breeding and Raising and Hatching of Barnyard Chickens!!!!!!!!!!

Well, she's sitting on 9 refrigerated eggs. Others have told me they've had good results, so I gave it a try. Will let you know in about 19 days.

Speaking of hatching eggs, will fertile eggs that have been in the refrigerator for a week or two be able to hatch if placed under a broody hen? She's been broody for a month, so I decided to go ahead and try, since I have so many eggs in the fridge.

Wet and Dry Fowl Pox - Graphic Pictures of Pus and Scabs

I wasn't sure if my young rooster still had an eye under there, but the bumps have disappeared and he has an eye! It looks normal, and he can now see out of both eyes again. The three pullets that had bumps are all almost recovered now too. I think we were lucky to have fairly mild cases, I...

Rooster with bright red on soles of his feet

My year old rooster Pierre has bright red on the soles of his feet. He seems perfectly fine otherwise, and is acting totally normally. None of the hens or babies have this. Some of the babies have fowl pox, but none got very sick, and they are recovering nicely. Anyone know what this is?

    Keeping Chickens Free Range

I wish I could do that! Some of mine lay as late as four or five pm. So I let them out when the sun is well up, and do my best to make the nest box area enticing, so they do mostly come back there to lay their eggs. We have about three acres in central Mexico for them to roam on, with lots of...
