What happens to chicks when the incubation humidity is too low?

I know that if you incubate at too high a humidity that they can drown in the shell, but what happens if it's too low? I live in a very dry climate where the humidity is often down to 15% (I add water to my bator so it's higher in there!!) so I was wondering what I would see doing eggtopsies...

What temperature should eggs be internally during incubation?

I'm incubating some turkey eggs and was getting wildly different readings from my plural thermometers so I decided to try getting a small (travel-size shampoo) bottle, filling it with water and letting it sit in the incubator over night to come to temp and measure the temperature that way. It...

How to get chuckars to lay in winter?

I've got a few chukars and was hoping to get some eggs from them during this winter. What does that take? Do they just need light or do I also have to keep them warm? And how warm? Also, is making them lay hard on them? I know they need some rest, but I'm not sure how much they really need to...

    Is this egg fertilized?

I'm new to this so I opened an egg to look at a yolk to practice identifying fertile eggs but I have no clue if it is or not! The images I've been looking at show firtle ones having a white ring and infirtile ones just have the white dot. This one has a white dot and a dark ring. Anyone know...

How to keep track of hatchlings

People claim that they can't feel it?? Yeah I don't buy that! But I also know that it's not a major injury and will likely heal quickly. I think it's similar to how organizations that trap and fix stray cats clip their ears so they know that the animal has been fixed and don't re-trap it in the...

    "Animal Protein" free chick starter

That's great to hear! I haven't really ever been super worried when I saw by-products or meal ingredients, but it's awesome to know that feed companies would rather use nutritious parts even if it's for their own reasons! :)

If we ate nothing but meat our health would suffer! Thing is we don't the chicken feed isn't just organ meat. It's a combination of animal and plant products which balances it out. Humans don't need to eat meat, and if we only ate organ meat and plants we'd be just as fine or possibly better off...

How to keep track of hatchlings

If it works for you, great! I'm not a huge fan because I don't like to do it and it can lead to infection. I also don't have terribly many birds to keep track of.

    Homemade Incubator

either should be fine. Whatever you see at the store that will fit your fixture. You might even be able to buy a thermostat that can turn your bulb off and on to regulate the temperature for you. I saw some on ebay for $15-20. Some for a lot more too though. I saw one called "heat Mat Lamp...

    Hands on hatching and help

Ahhh that makes sense! Wow! 100% is awesome! Yeah, it probably is more natural. Thanks :)

    "Animal Protein" free chick starter

The thing about "mad cow disease" is it can only be a problem if the brain or brainstem of an infected cow is in the feed. It came and spreads from feeding cows those parts of other cows. The risk is incredibly low and just not something I think people should worry about. I understand...

How to keep track of hatchlings

Leg bands are made in all sizes, but smaller ones will probably be harder to find... but the food dye idea is a great one! Food dye is water soluble so it may wash off if they get wet or something. It's not exactly permanent but It would last a good while!
