    I think I know... but...

Isn't she!!!! I was SO amazed when I got her. They were my first chickens and I had NO idea they could be so beautiful!! Plus they're both really friendly... follow me around like dogs. They come running (the BO usually goes full throttle too!) when they see me, thinking the ONLY reason I...

    I think I know... but...

Great, thanks! I was thinking orpington, but couldn't find any actual photos online... just drawings. Hmmmm.... so if this in a buff orpington... I'm VERRRRRRRY suspicious of my black orpington pullet (being a cockerel) as her waddle/crown are pretty pronounced and this adult's is not...

Pics! Help with chick gender please!

yeah... I've seen the term "easter egg chicken" and aracauna used pretty interchangeably and I realize it's not the original (true) aracauna breed that they sell. I don't care... although I do agree with you that the stores should market more truthfully. I actually got this type due to the egg...

Pics! Help with chick gender please!

How can you tell? Is it the crown/waddle, or just the stance? "She" walks a lot more upright than the other chick. They are both supposed to be layers... but of course we all know how accurate the feed stores can be. If it's a cockerel... anyone in NW Washington want a beautiful rooster??

    I think I know... but...

Okay... here are my two adult hens. I am pretty sure this one (Pearl) is a barred rock... (sorry it's kinda fuzzy) but I'm not so sure about THIS one (Blondie)... I'm thinking either buff rock or buff orpington. Thanks!

Pics! Help with chick gender please!

Okay... I hope this works... haven't tried posting pics on here yet! This is the black australian orpington pullet (hatched april 2nd) who I'm beginning to think may not be a pullet at all! Here's a closer look at her face For fun, this is my aracauna baby (also hatched April 2) I'll...

Do I have the most temperamental hens on the planet????

UGH! My two hens had been on egg-strike for well over a month... NO eggs at all (apparently mad about a food switch). FINALLY at least one of them started laying... got about 6 eggs in two weeks. Better than nothing I thought. Well... apparently moving my two pullets out into the coop was...

    How to tell...

Thanks I'll try to get some pics posted of them. My cockerel that I rehomed (the white one that came with my hens) was almost full grown and never crowed. Is that weird? I found him a new home after he started mounting my ladies. The babies crown/waddle is very red, but looking at photos, I...

    How do I free range?

My girls are about 6weeks old and I just put them out in the coop. I added a small run it surrounds two sides of the coop (which is 5'x5') and sticks out from the coop about 3ft in each direction (if that all makes any sense, lol), about 3ft high with chickenwire on sides and top. I figure...

    How to tell...

So I've reintroduced my two babies to each other (they were being raised by kids in different homes) and they've joined my hens in the coop. I had to divide the coop for now as the older hens weren't too excited about sharing with the little ones. Anyway... my chicks (now about 6weeks) are...

Ok, so I have the fever....NOW WHAT? lol

My hens will continue to free-range in my yard when their laying days are done. It's not necessary to "cull" the flock... chickens can live perfectly happy lives after they're done laying eggs. It's just not very economical. I don't eat meat, so it's not gonna make my dinner plate any fuller...

    April Showers Bring........SNOW?!?!

You're not alone. Even way over her in Washington we'll get a day of almost 70, then snowflakes the next! It's nuts! We had a really nice week at the end of March, so I decided to plant some stuff. Yeah. A week later I was scraping ice off my windshield again. UGH. Good thing seeds are cheap.

    Is the strike over??

I dunno WHAT was up. The only other time they've gone on strike was when I took their roo away (there was SUPPOSED to be three hens, not 2 & a roo!), but even that one only lasted two weeks!

    Is the strike over??

WOW! I FINALLY got my first egg in over 3 weeks! Wonder if the strike is over or if they just couldn't hold that one in any longer!

Is there anything chickens SHOULDNT eat?? (people-food wise)

I think most (not all) of the toxic stuff is like that... a little bit here and there doesn't hurt (usually). Or else it has to build up to a toxic level over time... Kinda like chocolate with dogs. SO many people tell me how they used to give their dogs chocolate as a treat and nothing ever...
