Once you refrigerate them, they must continue to be refrigerated. Refrigerated, they will keep for months, but who would want to? I keep mine on the counter, but they are usually eaten or given away within a couple of days.
I don't wash mine - the nest boxes are clean. If I get a dirty one...
Well it's hot here, and during a molt you're lucky to get any eggs at all, even soft or shelless. It sounds like you're doing everything right - my 2 SS are off their lay now and one apppears to be molting as well.
If your chickens are not on medication, the eggs are edible right away. Sometimes the first couple of eggs are tiny with no yolks ("fart" or "fairy" or "wind" eggs, but you'll see this as soon as you crack them. Sometimes as your hens get the hang of laying, the eggs are soft-shelled, malformed...
The heat here has caused 4 of my 6 to stop laying. I mist them, provide them with a pan of ice but they are miserable. Our heat should break a bit this week, but I am trying to keep them alive and comfortable and not worrying too much about the eggs.

Use a bit more sweet pdz - I find I need to toss a lot of it in my run - I get some real stinky-ness when the cabbage my chicks love decomposes in this heat! We have a mister system in one corner, too, so stuff gets wet and then heats up some. Couple that with chick poo and wow. So I rake out...

I'm a veteran, too.
I love to read all the conflicting opinions here. And I love to see the activism that springs from people just wanting to have their own version of peace and plenty, whether it be backyard chickens or other things. And I'm always aware that my freedom to swing ends at...
