I have a rooster who I had to help out the shell in the incubator with a twisted neck. I assume his would be hereditary and not fixable with vitamins etc? Poor fella turns his head upside down when he gets frightened or excited. I have been feeding him on my knee to make sure he gets enough to...
I have 14 babies and three still hatching in the incubator! Yay!
I had an acquaintance come over with three 12 year old girls to see the chicks. They had never seen chicks before and couldn't believe how soft they were etc. You should have seen their eyes pop out when I showed them the three...
Haha, yes I had the same plans for my barred Rock. She was going to be Mum to whoever hatched in the incubator as well as whoever she hatched. Not now though! It is now 3.15 am and the Civil Defence are warning 2 metre tsunamis are hitting Kaikoura in the South Island. My sister lives near the...
I decided to leave them in the incubator until morning. Have just been woken up by a huge earthquake in the South Island (we are in the other island of NZ) so had to get up and check them. They are sound asleep so will leave them. It is half past midnight and there have been another three big...
Argghhh! Remind me never to let my Barred Rock, Barbie, sit on eggs again! Her chicks were due today so I went and checked her.....three eggshad hatched, and those three chicks were squashed under her! Two eggs were pipping so I took those off her and they have hatched in my incubator. So now I...
Arrggghhhh! None of the farm stores here sell corid/coxiprol, and nor do the vets so I am have ordered some from Trademe (our equivalent of ebay). The only think I can think of doing for her in the meantime is giving her some medicated chick food in with her cat food and smashed up egg for...
I did check her crop and it is completely empty. I didn't put my finger in her vent, but I had a feel on the outside of her tummy to see if I could feel an egg and I couldn't feel anything hard. Her pin bones are wide apart and I know she has been laying.
I couldn't see any lice or mites on...
And I should say that she is totally free-range so definitely not over-crowded. I cleaned out the house (Cluckingham Palace) last weekend and sprayed it with ripcord, so the deep litter has just started again...there is only hay and a few grass clippings in the chook house.
One of my girls, Cilla Red, is not very well. Her tail is down, and she is so lethargic that she just sits where she is.
I know coccidiosis only/usually affects young birds, but up to what age? Cilla is nearly a year old and maybe she is too old?
Her belly is soft and squishy and I cannot...
Thank you :-)
I love this website.....other people who are chicken lovers. I get some really weird looks from my workmates when I bring up chicken conversations at the morning tea table!
I have a broody who I put eggs under this morning, and an incubator full of Barred eggs. If they hatch...
Thank you 'darkbluespace'. Tipping the incubator will be even easier! And then on day 18 I take them out and lay the eggs flat don't I?
This hatch will be bitter-sweet as Artemis Fowle, my Barred Rock roo, literally fell over dead from a probable cardiac arrest. Mind you, he was 8 years old!
I have a question and I cannot find an answer!
I have an incubator with no name....it is a cheapie that I have used a few times with reasonable success, but it does not have a turner. I have found plastic egg tray.....could I put the eggs in this (pointy end down) and put a piece of wood under...
I know this is a really old thread, but I have a question and I cannot find an answer!

Oops yes, I should have said that I put her in a nice clean new nest :-)
A couple of the eggs are pretty covered in the dried yolk so maybe tomorrow I will try and scrape it off. And yes, it's about time I learned to candle eggs! These eggs are PBR from my own flock. The girls are a few years...
Hubby and I came home from a week and a half away on holiday so my sons were babysitting the hens for me. 'Freckles' was clucky before we went so I gave her 10 eggs to sit on. When I lifted her up to check on her eggs, one of the eggs has broken and some of the remaining ones have dried yolk on...
