Ooh a gun thread! I’m currently going through the application process for my firearms license here in NZ, but I go out on the farm with my girlfriends dad to help with pest control using .22’s, rabbits, pukeko’s (swamphen, really good at putting holes in the silage cover, hence they get...
And another weekend of building. Here in New Zealand we have just had a long weekend so it was nice to spend it on the coop. We got it moved before the remaining walls and roof went on to save weight, although it still took 6 people. I managed to find some scrap corrugated iron from the farm...
Weekend 2 and 3: Slower progress now between work picking up an our weather being abysmal. The egg box is almost finished, roosting bar stay blocks are installed, the access door just needs batons, then it’s roof and move time before it gets too heavy. Project supervisor has been impressed thus far.
Weekend 1: Recruited my dad and broke out the tools. Got the main coop frame, floor and the two simple walls on. So far I have been lucky enough to use reclaimed pallet wood, old fence posts from the farm, and other lengths of free reclaimed wood. Current expenses: $28NZD for glue and some...
Went to look at chickens today, a family across the road from me breeds Orpington Sussex hybrids, and Leghorns. Since I’m starting with 4 hens, I feel like two of each will be a good option.
This is the other side of the problem here, we have some of the worst sun in the world here in NZ, so anything black and uninsulated will turn into a water heater.
This is my build diary. It will contain pictures, information, and an overview of my coop, my flock, and planned / built upgrades, and hopefully some tasteful humour along the way; This coop will end up slightly overbuilt, but I’m okay with that.
By day I am a mechanical engineering student...
I will document the build series in a thread and the upgrades made overtime, so far I’m just waiting on the last few materials for the main coop, run could take a little longer, aiming to be buying pullets around late April.
Hello! I am a new(ish) member, been lurking for a while. I’ve finally gotten to a point where I have the room, reason, and resources to begin my new adventure into small scale chicken farming! By day I am an engineering student, I garden in my spare time to wind down, and help look after 260...
I am currently designing my first coop, it has room for 6 hens, I plan to start with 4. I want to have a rain water collection barrel to water my chickens, but have seen a lot of mixed advice about barrels, algae and cleaning. My options are either a single 200L drum (55gal) or 2x 25L water...
