How long do broiler chickens live? As pets

Somehow Hooch (who is 20lbs or more and 9 months old) walk down the ramp today (our coop is 4 feet off of the ground) without injuring herself. She was acting cold this morning so I left her in the coop and just left the door open and the ramp up for the others to get in and out as they wanted...

    Adopting from the humane society!

A humane society just posted these two and is looking for a home for them. We have the room so I'm planning to adopt them. Can anyone help identify what breed they are? I only have Rhode island reds and silkies.

Silkie rooster, right? Our "egg layer variety" had 5/9 rooster.

Yes, I agree the refund is minimal for having to kill all the roosters since it was such a violent environment for everyone else! Good to know about her maybe being broody! Thank you!

Silkie rooster, right? Our "egg layer variety" had 5/9 rooster.

I called Bomgaars and they called their corporate office. They said that they would give me a refund and that the silkies shouldn't have been advertised as egg layers. They were all in the same group labeled as egg layers so I learned my lesson! I will try to introduce the little chick slowly to...

Silkie rooster, right? Our "egg layer variety" had 5/9 rooster.

We purchased 9 chicks from Bomgaars that were labeled as an egg layer variety. Three somehow managed to jump out of the coop when they were young and got eaten by an owl. Out of the six that were left, four of them were roosters. This one didn't crow until today, a week after we butchered the...

How long do broiler chickens live? As pets

We originally bought 4 broilers with the intent to butcher them. Three of the grew so fast that they had heart attacks and I quickly realized that I wouldn't have been able to kill them anyways. Our sweet "Hooch" is still left as our free ranging broiler. She's 8 months old and I have to lift...

First Winter coming up! Advice appreciated!

A little more information! We are in northwest Iowa, our roosters are 3 silkies and one Rhode Island red. I added a picture of our coop. This is before it was done and I don't have an after picture, but a ramp from the door down would be what I need! I'm thinking a gentle zig zag ramp maybe...

Thanks everyone! I came up with a ramp plan last night and think we will be butchering all of the roosters!

First Winter coming up! Advice appreciated!

Hi Everyone! I'm new here and new to having chickens! We bought 4 broilers and 4 Rhode Island Reds in March. Two broilers died from heart attacks as chicks, one died as he was walking down the ramp (tripped and broke his neck.), and our last sweet broiler (Hooch) is free ranging, laying eggs...
