    Hickory nut help!

Hoping someone here has some experience with this. We just moved on to a new property that has multiple mature hickory trees. I spent some time in early September gathering nuts and did the "float" test. 90% sank 10% floaters. Not too bad, yeilded 7lbs over all. The nuts are still dropping so I...

    Duck started laying eggs

I keep reading that, but none of mine really ever quack. The only time is in the morning, one of them usually calls out if she's getting impatient about getting out of the pen. Only other time was when one of them was limping. I kept her in the pen and the other 2 ran down to the pond. Once the...

    Duck started laying eggs

Wouldn't you see evidence of feathers in their pen? Either way I am resigned to the idea that we have 3 hens. Which is fine by me because I was hoping to get some eggs. So far, it seems only 1 is laying. We've had an egg a day for the last week. Don't know how long that will continue since I...

    Duck started laying eggs

That is what I am thinking. I had heard they might not molt their feathers for another month but I'm guessing the drake feather would have appeared by now. One of the biggest reasons why we thought we had one drake is because I observed "him" mounting one of the others on the pond on several...

    Duck started laying eggs

Hi y'all! We're new duck parents and have been coming to this forum for support and answers since we got our 3 little nuggets back in March. We have what we believe are 3 Rouens and they are almost 5 months old. We spent the first few months trying to guess their sex but gave up about 3 months...

    Difference between Rouen and Mallard.

That's interesting because my rouen is currently the smallest of the 3. How long does it take for them to be full size? It's possible he might be a bit younger.

    Difference between Rouen and Mallard.

I think the consensus was that 2 is a rouen. Mallards might have a lighter spot/line that seems to fade. My little guy with 2 stripes still has 2. The others only 1 with a spot on their "cheek".

    Difference between Rouen and Mallard.

We have a similar debate going on in my house. I'm not an expert by any means, but after reading through this thread I think we have 2 mallards and 1 rouen. I'm guessing on the previous posts that yours are mallards but again, I'm definitely not an expert. And I here you on the gender thing...

Ducks gone over to the wild side

Well it's been a couple days and we seem to have agreed on a routine so far. I let them out in the morning and immediately want to go down to the pond. I check on them throughout the day, they still respond and come look for me when I call them. Then at night I call for them and bring their...

Ducks gone over to the wild side

Hi all! New memeber here and duck mom of three 4-5 week old mallards/rouens (we're new to this and got the ducks at tractor supply so we're a little fuzzy on age and breed). We have a decent sized property with a small shallow pond and of course have alway enjoyed observing the comical...

Preditor was my thought as well. Thankfully they are an alert and quick little bunch on the water, but I do worry. We would like to keep them free range, but the pond might have to be off limits. We also have some wild ducks that visit the pond frequently. I don't think any of them are nesting...

Hi! My name is Leigh and I have been using this forum to search for answers since we got our 3 little buggers (as my dh refers to them ) about 3 weeks ago. So far they seem happy and healthy if not a bit challenging from time to time. Case in point, tonight, when my dh tried to call them in from...
