Hi Chynasparks,
Yup we got chickens in Hawaii, and like much of the mainland, the interest in backyard chickens is growing. In fact, with the recent illness hitting domestic chicken farms, eggs are getting really expensive ($5.40/doz). I took some pics while I was building my first coop...
Thanks Ridgerunner!!!
I'm in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island at about 700' elevation so our temps range from low 50s (winter nights) to high 80s (summer days). Throw in some humidity and low to no winds on the hot days and it can feel like 95. Yeah, cold really isn't a factor out here as much...
Thanks bigt447!!!
I've been reading some posts in this forum section and it seems like the hard cloth wire flooring isn't too much of an issue as long as it is supported properly. If the poop does get on the wire, how hard is it to clean? Would a good brushing with a stiff brush pretty much...
Hi All,
I have a question about coop floors. Specifically, do any of you have an opinion or recommendation about the use of hard cloth wire for a coop floor. I was trying to think of bad things that could happen and came up with "injury": feet stuck in the holes in the wire.

I found info on black wyandottes, but they are supposed to have yellow feet...My 2 girls have black feet. Other than that, they seem to fit the description for black wyandottes. Maybe I have to wait and see what they look like as adults.
RoostersCrow,
Both photos are of the same bird. I didn't know that there was a black variety of wyandotte. None of the internet searches I did mentioned black wyandottes.
Habibs,
thanks, I'll look up sumatras and compare.
Hi All,
I'm new to chickens and would really appreciate some help identifying this pullet ( I hope it's a girl ). She's right around 7-8 weeks here. I got her from Del's in their assorted wyandotte pen. She has a pea comb, black feet, and some of those iridescent blue/black feathers. Any...
Diva, good to hear. I actually have about 50 coffee trees and have been processing my own kona coffee for about 7- years. we've recently been hit with an introduced pest, the coffee borer beetle which has really affected the State's coffee growers. Currently working on some pest...
Howzit Hawaiians,
Steven from Kailua-Kona here. Got some chicks from Dels in Hilo about 7-weeks ago and started building their coop this past weekend. The chicks are "supposed" to be pullets (3-wyandottes and 3-australorps). I'm kinda thinking that I only have 1 wyandotte (she looks like a...
Hi Guys,
I'm a new chicken owner and I'm finding this Site to be a wealth of information. I have three Australorps, three Wyandottes, and an abandoned "wild" chick that are all about 7-weeks old. I'm in the process of building their coop and have them temporarily housed in a hutch within a...
