That is exactly what I am worried about. I held her last night & can feel her breast bone. Was startled by how sharp it feels & nothing in her crop.
I don’t need to worry about predators if I leave her in the crate in the run. I built predator-proof runs. I don’t close the door from the coop...
She sleeps in the nest box at night as well. My husband has checked. I only have 3 hens in there. 2 are OE's that lay copper eggs, 1 is a Barred Rock that lays light pink/ mauve. I get 1-2 eggs a day right now. There is a copper one under the broody OE every other day or so & then I have found a...
Thank you so much for answering my questions! I will try restricting her to a crate in the run for a few days & see what happens. My husband & I had been pulling her out of the nest box every time we find her in there but to no avail.
Well she is. She is showing all the signs of being broody, doesn’t leave the nest box, makes noises at me as soon as I come into the coop, if I pull her out she puffs up & flattens herself on the floor making almost growling noises at me, if I kick her out of the run to have free-range time with...
I have my first broody hen. I have tried pulling her out & putting her in the run with the other chickens, keeping the door to the coop closed, nothing has worked out. I was hoping that after 21 days this would be over, however, she keeps laying eggs! My question is- will she remain broody for...
The hens only ate maybe 1 each. I think a couple didn’t eat any. The roos ate a few each. Since roos are what they are & are known to be aggressive at times, I think maybe the berries amplified that.
Right, I understand that & with their ages I have been watching, but just too much of a coincidence that all 3 suddenly raged on the same day, all within a half hour on the berries. I am thinking of giving it a few days & letting them have some more to see what happens.
My roosters are about 10mos old. I don’t buy that something in their crop could not start to be taken up into their system tho. By your argument, if they ingested a toxin like fertilizer, this would mean it wouldn’t start to affect them until that night. I have a hard time believing that. I...
I have 2 roos in 1 coop on 1 side of my property & the 1 other roo in a coop completely on the other side of my property. The 2 groups do not interact with eachother. They stay on their separate sides. The type of holly on your property is not in the group that contains theobromine so you could...
Hey all- I learned something yesterday & thought I better share in case anyone else encounters this.
There is a large holly shrub right next to one of my coops. When I let my chooks out to free-range for a while yesterday I noticed the holly berries were all perfectly ripe so I pulled a branch...
