We had a barred rock we called Rosemary, but he 'turned' into another roo, so we found him another home. Shame, I really liked that name! :)
As far as the oil gland, I just read another post on here that said both had oil glands, hens have to waterproof their feathers as well... I'm a little confused now... :)
His coloring is coming in more everyday, just getting more beautiful...any ideas what this guy might be? Probably a mix, but wondering if anyone knows-he started out as more black, and he is lightening up with more gray/ blue?, with the white/light gray barring on his feathers. This picture...
Well, Jewel has become Jasper, and out of the 3 roosters we decided to keep him. :) He's all ready so much bigger, and his colors are beautiful!! I'll have to post new pic's... He's such a good little guy so far... hopefully he will stay so!
I don't know why not, it could be done more "rustic" looking out of that type of material and would look great. I once sided and trimmed out a building with old wood from a barn I had torn down. The cedar T&G siding for our coop came from our local Habitat Restore.

The plans said 4-5 "regular" or 6 Bantams. It also depends on if you have a larger run or let them free range. We have 5 and are planning on letting ours free range during the day so they will only use the loft part at night to roost and of course lay in the nesting boxes.
