Can you let a goat free range?

My three does and buck, plus three kids, have never been fenced simply because I can't afford to feed hay all summer at our prices (and with all the free food why bother?). We are on a dead end road, five acres and the nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away. They have never gone more than about...

what has this cockerel come from ?

I would guess he has something of one of the Mediterranean breeds like Ancona or Minorca in him just looking at those huge wattles. Minorcas have white shanks and Anconas yellow. As for the other parts, not sure. Perhaps some common farm breed like Barred Rock, because he looks like he has some...

    Breed help please.

Yeah, some sort of mix. What an interesting color pattern! Maybe there's some Barred Rock or Cuckoo Marans.

    Ancona?

    what breed is this?

I would definitely say Dark Cornish if she has the pea comb. When she gets bigger she should have a lot of breast meat when you pick her up and her feathers should be 'hard' and glossy compared to other chickens. Interested to see the outcome.

The color genetics for a game & non-game breeds?

It's cool to see them! It doesn't Look like my guess was very accurate except that one is black and one is brown lol! One of the parents was not homozygous for color or they would have all been the same color except for the sexual dimorphism.

The color genetics for a game & non-game breeds?

I'll give it a go! Red is a gene that is recessive but modified by other genes... if I'm remembering correctly from Genetics of the Fowl. The birchen probably is a black gene with a modifier (just a guess as GOTF does not analyze birchen pattern). The black will probably dominate with some red...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I am so glad to have found this because I mix my own feeds and would like a way to soften up grains for smaller birds without as much grinding. I knew about sprouting feed grains but I never made the leap to simply fermenting it so that I wouldn't have to do all the draining. I found this just...

    Question about integration

A broody hen usually lets chicks go at about 5 weeks, with individual variations and breed variations. (For example, Aseel hens are known to mother chicks for about 6 months) The mother makes them integrate into a flock at that age if they are raised inside the flock to begin with, and so yours...

Review by '' on item 'Kraienköppe'

Kraienkoppes are very alert to predators, and are perfect free-range birds. They lay tinted eggs in great quantities if you can find the nest and leave some dummy eggs because they will move their nests if you take them all. Even the pullets that have just started laying do this and go broody in...

Review by '' on item 'Cornish'

These hens were very hardy and excellent foragers. Not flighty as some breeds, but cautious, and likely to be below other breeds in the flock pecking order. The eggs are medium, brown, with very strong shells, laid regularly but not as well as some laying breeds. They are slow to mature, but get...

    Auracana or ameracauna????

An Easter Egger is just any bird with blue or khaki eggs, which is the blue gene over a brown egg, and so yes the offspring from all of these except the Leghorn will be khaki eggs. The Leghorn should make blue eggs? I think... because the white egg is an egg with no color gene at all? If someone...

Things to put in the run

Wood chips are an excellent idea... as they break down and compost with help from the chickens scratching they will grow lots of goodies like grubs. Look up deep litter online... it's the same concept and some research has shown that a deep litter when mature can provide up to 100% of a flock's...

what type of Aseel do I have?

Mottled is the color... were you looking for what strain you had? There are a whole bunch of them but a Reza would be 5.5 to 6 pounds ish for the cock, and the kulang is much bigger. Like I said there are a lot more but those are probably the more common in the US.

    What breed cross is this

Rumplessness can also be induced by improper incubation temperatures, I believe it was in the second week of incubation but I'm not sure. The same with crooked toes and some other deformities, but sometimes its hard to tell unless you breed them and cross the offspring, so I guess I just...
