Sorry to not get back to this thread. Thanks everyone for the comments/suggestions. We lost a second girl two weeks after this. It was our blue cochin that was solid black. After talking to some others, we think it is the Texas heat that likely killed them both. We have added electrolytes to...
We lost a hen last night. I went to lock the girls in their coop and realized I was short one when I counted them. I looked around our chicken yard and found Buffy, one of our Buff Orpingtons, dead below the nesting boxes in our coop. She was stiff, except for a floppy neck. I could not find any...
Looks like two of my girls had a hidden nest of eggs. Yesterday I found NINE eggs in a nest in one of my bushes. We were out of town all week with the neighbors taking care of the girls. Our frizzled cochin got out every day (I still can't figure out how she's getting out). Now I know why.

Yes!! I have been meaning to update, but we have cousins come in town. So, we've been busy with 7 kids between 3 and 8, my son's 7th birthday yesterday, and the new chickies. :) It has been great fun!
I will post pictures later. My children and the cousins are in love. Chickies are doing...

Absolutely I'll post pics! My kiddos are so excited as well. They all helped daddy to build the brooder box over the weekend. I think that made it more real for them.
Who would have thought an email subject like that would be so exciting! lol. 15 little ladies should be here either tomorrow or Wednesday morning. I.can't.wait!
We don't have a garage or covered outside space right now, other than the porch. It is still pretty cold at nights here, so that is not an option for the brooder initially. We may just keep them in the office, which is far from sleeping and eating spaces, for the first 3 weeks and then move them...
Good to know on the construction staples. Thank you!
And that is true o the dust and the fire hazards. Our laundry room is fairly large, but I don't want to cause more risk.
Good points on the extra space and accounting for the feeders/water stations. Thank you!
He is starting not he coop on Saturday. The chicken yard took longer than expected due to the flu and another virus making the rounds with all four of our kids and him. We finally finished that, and now...
I've been lurking and reading on here for a while, but this is my first post. :)
We are getting 15 day old chicks soon and I planned on putting the brooder together in the next couple of days. I originally planned on a 50 gallon rubbermaid tub for them, but I think that may be too small for...
