    Newborn chick with swollen hock!

I have a 6 hour old Serama chick who is still in the incubator. S(he) has a swollen, red right hock and it seems painful. She'll put it down then pick it right back up again. She hatched by herself, so no trauma from others. Has any one seen this? Any ideas?

Should chick starter crumble be as fine as, say, ground cinnamon?

Oops, I've wasted some good stuff then. Thank you so much, I'll start doctoring it so they'll munch it up!

Should chick starter crumble be as fine as, say, ground cinnamon?

I purchased the Countryside Organic chick starter and there are some pieces of grain and other bits with texture, but the majority of the feed is dusty and ground as finely as cinnamon and similar spices. My chicks (almost 4 weeks old) don't want to eat the finer stuff, so I find myself dumping...

Ideas on where to raise the growing chicks!

I'm trying to be a good mama hen. :) I happened to read where folks were discouraging the use of regular bulbs vs the red heat lamp bulbs, mentioning screwing up their diurnal schedule or some such thing. And, I see how when the sun goes down, they are under their EcoGlow for the entire night...

Ideas on where to raise the growing chicks!

Thank you! I tend to over think, but don't want to "should" on myself later! :)

Ideas on where to raise the growing chicks!

I have 6 buff orpington chicks that are growing like weeds. I need to move them from my bathroom tub to either a spare bedroom where I can allow the sunrise to wake them and the sunset to put them to bed ( it's quiet and not as social a place as the living room), OR put them in the living room...

    Please help: chick not walking,

Thank you all! I love the support of chicken folks! The chick is getting around just fine; I put him in with the others and he's holding his own. He comes over to me when I go check on them, and he actually likes to snuggle for a little bit before I put him back in the brooder box. They are...

    Please help: chick not walking,

Thank you! I let him sit with support on my hand for a bit this morning before work and massaged his little leg. This chick likes to be held. :) This afternoon s/he's fine. :)

    Please help: chick not walking,

Hi all! I had a successful first hatch yesterday and it was truly exciting. I have six buff orpington chicks, five of which are fluffy and normal. One, however, isn't able to walk,. One leg is out straight and the other seems contracted, though I can move it gently. Is there anything I can do...

Brand spankin' new to chickens, and I love them!

Thank you so much! I'm starting to think electric fencing is the way to go to keep them safest given my terrain. I'm the one with the snake problem--I'm terrified of them! Thank you all for your input, and I'll keep researching. My babies are due to hatch next weekend and I can't wait!

Brand spankin' new to chickens, and I love them!

Hey, all! I'm a huge researcher, but I'm at a loss. I'm trying to design a portable coop and run to be used on uneven terrain. I had what I thought was a great predator proof run design, but with my uneven/sloping yard, I'm afraid a critter or snake will get underneath an edge of a solid run...
