Chick not thriving, recurring pasty butt

Unfortunately the silkie did not make it through the night that night. :( She did not end up making it through the night that night. :( In total we lost 3 birds pretty quickly. Unfortunately, two days ago I noticed another one of the chicks - my one ameracauna - showing symptoms. Listless...

Chick not thriving, recurring pasty butt

Update for anyone who read this, the chick did not make it through the night last night, and took one other chick with it - one of our silkies. Another silkie is very sick this morning, and likely won't make it through the day. :( Based on the posture of the sick bird last night, I believe it...

Chick not thriving, recurring pasty butt

After doing some more research it seems my strongest lead at this point is vent gleet or some other fungal type infection. I forgot to mention that there's definitely an "off" smell about her, even after the little bath she got to clean her fuzzy bum. I'm going to start apple cider vinegar in...

Chick not thriving, recurring pasty butt

We picked up ten chicks from a local hatchery this past Saturday. They were a day and a half old. One of the babies, a Cochin bantam, is not doing as well as the rest of the birds. It's not growing as much, has kind of a funny stance, and we are cleaning pasty butt off of it every single day...

    "The miracle of life"

Thanks! We're looking forward to having a full-size flock again. Long story short, we don't know about the dogs. Haven't seen them since 4th of July weekend but who knows. It was an entire litter of pups and the mama dog that kept escaping because the neighbor had a broken gate latch and was...

    "The miracle of life"

Just want to post a success story. Father's Day 2019, a neighbor dog and its five young puppies got out and decimated our flock that was roaming our backyard. We were left with just one bird, a gold laced wyandotte. She had never shown any signs of broodiness, and was extremely wary of people...

How long can a hen safely be broody?

Thanks! Hadn't thought of the scrambled egg thing - I've fed them scrambled eggs before but only out in the run when I had a huge egg surplus.

How long can a hen safely be broody?

I've got a buff orpington hen that's about 2 years old. She's gone broody before, and I broke her because I didn't need more chicks. However, this time, I am actually in need of some chicks due to gradual losses in the flock. But...I didn't decide I needed chicks until she had already been...

Painting the outside of my coop

You're welcome, and thanks for the compliment on my coop. My disclaimer is it started out as a garden shed that came with our house, I just modified the interior, added the nest box, and replaced the old sagging rotting doors. No way I spent the money to build something that big for ten chickens. :)

Could use some advice on this set up

Hey there, welcome to BYC! I'll see if I can help at all. I think your board setup is fine. It gets the job done. My girls could access under the coop after I first built the run onto it, if they wanted, so I piled up some 4"-6" limestone rocks at the base to keep them out. Again, this...

    BEST roosts ??

+100 to this post. I'll go ahead and be the guy that says it: unfortunately I believe you're going to find as many "best roost" answers as you get replies to your thread and I believe most people wind up choosing a material based on which reply was most appealing to them. That said, I'll...

Painting the outside of my coop

Behr Barn and Fence paint. Classic red barn look and the paint is specifically livestock safe when dry. Home Depot carries it, and depending on where you live, they'll ship it to your door. They also have white, if you want to add white trim, or use it to paint the inside. Red paint here and...

    Straw or pine shavings

Sorry for the long post. I too have a somewhat wet run. Water from the hill behind it runs right through after a heavy rain. Personally I totally avoid pine shavings and pine needles in the run itself (I do use shavings inside the coop, though). If you're looking for something to break down in...

Show me your separate enclosure for young chicks near flock

I've got just such a setup. It worked out great. That panel on the right side of the small enclosure opens up. After the littles were a bit bigger, I cracked that open just enough so they could slip in and out at will but the big girls couldn't make it in. We had almost no behavior problems...

Hens and pullets together, soft shelled eggs

Thanks everyone for the tips and help. More oyster shell was gone last night, and the condition of egg shells already seems to be improved even on the eggs I collected last night. Egg size is still reduced but at least they're not fragile. I did go ahead and modify their feed slightly. The...
