Help! My two newborn chicks (hatched today) are being pecked by the week old chick and momma hen! One is already bloody around it's eye. Should I remove both new babies right away? Was thinking of putting them in a box and bringing them inside? Any suggestions?
Thanks everyone for the input. I'm hopeful that he will still be a she but it really isn't looking like it. I guess I'll know when he crows, lol. Here is the pic I promised. Looks to me like a comb and some wattles starting..... Thanks again for your help!
Thanks for all the input! My mother read that you usually get hens in straight run so she bought 6 straight run :(. We are trying to find a home for our speckled Sussex but most want hens. I don't want the Roos hurting each other but if we can manage to keep an extra (other than the two we...
We ordered 25 baby chicks, two of them roosters. The company sent us 27, one of which is another rooster ( on the packing slip). Now we have a mottled Cochin that has, what looks looks like, a red comb starting. They are 5 weeks. Could this still be a female or does anyone know if you can...
We have the one quart chick feeder. How much grit should we put in it? The baby chick grit bag doesn't say. We are going to start letting them roam in the chicken pen this weekend for a while and we are giving them a very small amount of rolled oats.
I put the apple cider vinegar in their water this am. I think we are going to go get a few baby cakes today too. We have two hutches for the chicks to prevent over crowding.
Thanks again Leadwolf1. This is our first try at chicks (my mom had some in late 90s and didn't remember having these issues) and we want to give all of them a good start. I had the littlest chick of the 27 die on day 2 as I held her. I bawled like a baby, so did my 12 yr old son! Don't...
Does anyone know if you should provide chick grit if you feed the chicks oats? I thought I saw on this forum somewhere that you don't but I can't find it again. We want to try oats to help with the pasty butt.
We just read about that today (day 3) and immediately took 8 of our 26 (we lost our runt on day 2) and soaked their bumbs in warm water to loosen and then used a warm, wet paper towel to clean off. We then put a blow dryer on low warm to dry the bumbs. All seem to be doing good so far. We...
Our littlest baby died last night. I held her as she took her last breath. So sad for me and my 12 year old son. Thank the Lord the other 26 chicks are doing really well. I don't think we can go through that again.
