20 week old hens won't go in coop to roost

Trisha, If you have enough room in the coop, you could section a part of it off with a fence or chicken wire. This way they can get used to each other for few days before you let them get in contact. There will always be some bullying but hopefully nothing serious at that point. I did this with...

20 week old hens won't go in coop to roost

I have the same problem. I have 8 one year old hens( 1RIR and 7BR) I have introduced 5(BRs), they are now 18wks. They will not go into the coop on their own. They get along fine during the day but also have a large area to roam. I have taken them each in by hand every night and wonder if they...

    Red butted Barred Rock

I have witnessed the plucking, you were right. That's why they call me "just hatched". It has been better since I have turned off the coop light and let them out earlier. With less time in the coop and more time free ranging, I hope it will be a thing in the past.

    Red butted Barred Rock

Oh... I am really wanting it to be ANYTHING else! They have been together since last spring and seem to get along great. I have a light in the coop on a timer for an hour or so morning and evening, if I turn it off will they be less likely to peck in the dark? Maybe I should have the pop door...

    Red butted Barred Rock

I don't think it is pecking, I have been watching them closely and haven't seen any evidence of pecking. They free range from sun up to sundown and have a acre to explore. It has been very wet out there lately and I'm sure they get wet butts walking through the puddles, I'm wondering if its just...

    Red butted Barred Rock

My 8 month barred rock has a very red butt and a loss of feathers around her vent. She is otherwise acting normal and the other chickens are healthy. They have a large coop with several roosts, they free range during the day. They are on a layer feed and I give them scratch grains by hand...

    Wing clipping,yes or no?

Update! She got out anyway and we had not seen hide nor feather of her for over a week, we assumed she was dead. She came back today! I don't know were she has been, she seems just fine. The other chickens are reluctant to let her back in the flock. I am planning on keeping them in the small...

    Wing clipping,yes or no?

I just clipped her and she cant fly the coop anymore! She is not happy however and is desperately trying to find a hole in the fence. I had to go with both wings, she could make it over with one. Thanks for the advice.

    Wing clipping,yes or no?

I started with 10 pullets. 8 BR, a RIR and one black sex link. 5 are 8 months and 5 are 7 months. They were a healthy flock, the first 5 started laying in August and the next have started laying in September, except Thelma and Louise. They were a little behind and were not part of the "in"...

    Egg drop Syndrome?

I was just doing some reading and I think my problem is the pack of coyotes that have been making themselves heard lately. The chickens are safe and secure in their coop at night but I'm sure they hear the howling, I know they wake me up around 1am. This happens every fall along with the...

    Egg drop Syndrome?

I bought my first chics this spring and they just started laying late this summer. This week their egg production dropped dramatically and I have noticed a lot of shell less eggs. Today I noticed one of my BR's acting sick and having runny diarrhea. I've already successfully treated one who...

Where do chickens generally lay their first egg?

My chics laid their first eggs Wednesday. I found them in the yard, they seem to use the same "nest". Guess I'll have to keep them in for a week or so to get them to lay in the boxes. Too bad, they sure love to free range.

Does any one here NOT name their chickens?

I only name a few. Most I don't. For one, I would run out of names... two, when you have 100+ what's the point? and three, if you are going to eat them one day, it probrably would help if you didn't name them. Ya know? Ja! I think it will be hard to announce that we are having Burt and Ernie...
