I have a broody Buff Orpington who's chicks are hatching as we speak. But whenever I check, she is pecking at the hatching eggs and looks to be eating them, pulling at the babies, etc. One chick that hatched a day early died. She seems to be trampeling another hatched chic as well.

I have 11 hens and one rooster.
Two of my hens show a tremendous amount of ware from the rooster. Featherless backs, and missing feathers on the top of their winds and part of their tail. Kind of awful looking.
What strategies do people use? I like my rooster, but am wiling to consider...
I do not have experience with meat birds, just layers.
I have barred rocks, NH Reds, Delewares, Buff Orps, and Australorps.
All are the same age and the Australorps are by far the largest of the group. Does anyone have any experience with them as meat birds?

One of my hens got chased through the woods by a dog (not my dog). The dog never got her, but the chicken is now, understandably, missing.

After going a few weeks with simple cedar fence posts and 4' high chicken wire for my chicken run, I ripped it all down and started over with PT 2x4's and 1/2" hardware cloth. I haven't lost any of my 12, 9 week old chicks yet, but I knew it was a matter of time.
So now I have a 5 to 6' tall...
