    Huge pile of genetic questions?

I have my first ever broody hen. I had some genetic questions, one specific. To start, if barring is a dominant gene, what happens when you breed a White Plymouth Rock rooster x Barred Plymouth Rock hen? Also, does anything special occur when crossing White Plymouth Rock x Rhode Island Red...

Pros and Cons of having a mixed flock?

That is probably the best hatchery I have seen. Though then minimum order until the end of March is 15 chicks.

Pros and Cons of having a mixed flock?

I will check out Henderson's Chicken Breeds Chart that you mentioned. The breeds I mentioned were selected based on somewhat looks, egg laying ability, bearing confinement, tendency to be docile, and broodiness. I want to start out with around 10. So I was thinking of doing 3 each and...

Pros and Cons of having a mixed flock?

Hey everyone! I was looking into getting Wyandottes, Sussex, or Plymouth Rocks. What are the pros and cons of having a mixed flock versus all the same breed?

    Coop stability?

I wasn't sure how to put this in the title. Basically, I live where it is relatively windy. If I build a 6 x 6 coop, will it need to be connected to posts that are in the ground?

    Latest you should get chicks?

I wasn't sure if there was a wrong time of year, since for the first month or so they need a source of heat. Thanks for the answers! I think May gives me plenty of time to build a coop. I know a few pet stores/farm stores here that carry chicks into June.

    Latest you should get chicks?

Hi, I had chickens several years back, though dogs slowly picked them off until we rehomed the last remaining chicken. I now have a home to myself and am looking to get chickens again. I originally was going to hold off until next year but this time 4 years ago I got my last set of chicks...

    Such thing as too big?

Ridgerunner, I'm pretty central here in OK, we have brutal summers and some nasty winters, though it seems to be hit and miss with both. I'll be sure to vent higher up for the winters and lower for the summers.

    Such thing as too big?

I really didn't think it was a problem, but wanted to check. I will stick with my original thinking of 8' by 8'. If I have any more questions I'll be sure to post instead of Google. Also, I'll probably post my final plans to get some feedback on it! Not my first time with chickens, but...

    Such thing as too big?

It said that too big of a coop would make it harder for the chickens to produce heat and stay warm? Though, I plan on insulating and venting well, but wanted to make sure that my plans weren't in that category. I hope to allow them to free range my whole acre and a half yard, if possible...

    Such thing as too big?

Hi! I am in the beginning stages of starting a coop so that we can get chicks next spring. I read that too big of a coop is somewhat of a bad thing. So basically, I am wondering would a 8' x 8' x Probably 8' coop be too big for approximately 10 chickens? Thanks in advance!

I need help designing a coop!?

So I decided that I'm going to fork out almost 400 dollars of fencing to secure my horses almost 8 acres of pasture suitable enough to keep the chickens in and any dogs or coyotes out. Plus if any does manage to get in, I have to miniature horses who hate dogs or cats. I will have a 5 foot...

I need help designing a coop!?

I have thought about buying a shed or shed kit and converting it. Also thought about buying a chicken coop kit. Though my dad is a carpenter so it shouldn't be hard for him to build me one. Its just when it comes to our own household things, he likes to cut corners. That is a pretty neat...
