    Mating Injury Under Wing

Yay! I thought you sounded like a kiwi 😁👍🏻 Yeah, lack of easy availability sucks but that’s kinda how we became #8 wire thinkers, we had to use what we had! I’ve only been keeping hens for two years (feels like forever!) and have found the Lifestyle Block magazines (especially their How to...

    Mating Injury Under Wing

Hi Avie02, How are you getting on with your hen? I’m in the same boat as you - I live in New Zealand and just about every product talked about on websites isn’t available here - it’s had to be ordered. One if my girls has the same type of wound and I’ve been treating it with sterile saline...

Chook has raspy breathing in the morning.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I’m putting it down to stress and am starting her off on a recovery regime to help her regain her pre broody condition. She’s still very light and is picky about what she eats - currently on chick starter with added fresh greens, free range access to grass and...

Chook has raspy breathing in the morning.

Her warning noises are quite different and she is mean, growling and pecking at me if she thinks I’m going to interfere with her babies. But I do think it is an stress/anxiety response based on observations from earlier today.

I’m really sorry to hear about your rooster. No, no change to colouring and it’s not really difficulty breathing, rather more just an odd sound.

Chook has raspy breathing in the morning.

Thanks for your replies. After observing her today I think it’s actually a reaction to stress. Our dog suddenly barked today and she started making the noise again until she realised wasn’t a threat. Possibly the same situation in the morning when she has to be sure everything is safe for the...

Chook has raspy breathing in the morning.

One of my chooks has recently developed a raspy breathing pattern but it’s only occurring in the morning. I’ve checked her over and there’s no other symptoms of respiratory illness, or any other signs of ill health, or cause for this that I can see or find information about. She is rasping on...

Kia ora from Dunedin, New Zealand

Gyrtle seems much more content now that I’ve opened up the run of Myrtle’s brooding coop so she can visit. Myrtle won’t let her near the nesting box where she is sitting but popped out today for a bath etc and Gyrtle escorted her everywhere. It was really sweet to watch.

Good to know, thank you. I will probably keep one (we are allowed to have a rooster in Dunedin as long as no one complains) or rehome. Eggs are from Easter Eggs hens and the rooster who fertilised them (🤞🏻) is an Araucana and he is magnificent.
