new coop but with roost issues

This is the debacle I'm going through today. The hen house I built is 4 ft tall, 4 ft deep, and 8 ft wide. I'm only going to have 6 Buff Orpingtons egg layers. Do I really need a ladder type roosting? Will one 8 ft long, 1 ft from the wall and 1 ft from the floor suffice?

    A question on coop flooring

Yeah, like I said. I was concerned about how their feet would would react to a mesh floor. I guess I'll stay with a wood floor covered in straw, and just change it out periodically. What I'll do is add prop open windows on each side for better cross ventilation. Thanks for the quick reply folks.

    A question on coop flooring

Hi folks. I've looked at so many coops with runs online. All of them too small and seriously over priced, so I decided to build my own for around $200 My coop and run building supplies are coming in this weekend. I'll be building a 4' X 4' X 8' wide coop with a 8' X 12' X 6' high run, fully...

    Flea talk

We going through the worst year of fleas here in southern Texas. The little triangular bottles of flea repellent that you buy at the pet store or supermarket, and apply to your pets neck and back are useless. They are only a watered down version of the real thing. The real thing you get by...

Best time of year to raise meat birds where it's hot? (South Carolina)

I'm concerned about the heat here in Southern Texas. Summers can get to between 95 and 105 during the day. I also will be raising Cornish X to about the 8th week for meat birds. Once out of the brooder, I'll keep them inside of a 12' X12' shed to run free. Controlling cold temps will be easy...

    Am I missing something here???

Yeah, my first run will be live chicks from a local dealer just up the road from me. After that, I'd like to be able to breed them. The question is, how do you get them to live long enough to mate with a rooster??? From what I'm reading they have heart problems after 8 weeks. I'm thinking...

    Am I missing something here???

Thanks June. Let's see, 3 weeks in the incubator, 6 weeks in the brooder, and 8 weeks free run. 17 weeks total. That's doable.

    Am I missing something here???

Thanks folks. Sounds like typical sales hype then. Put a food out before it's allotted growth time, give it a special name, and charge twice as much. Ok, since Cornish hens seem to grow a little faster than other types, how long should I wait between the time they leave the brooder and slaughter?

    Am I missing something here???

I'm interested in raising CornishX for meat birds. When I go to the supermarket I see two Rock-Cornish hens in a package, both the size of a parrot. Great taste, but tiny. Then I read here that CornishX are the same size as any other hen. Is there a difference between Rock-Cornish...

    Texas duck family

Sorry for my tardiness in responding, but I've been all over the forum reading as much as I can. To date, I figured out what size and shape I'll build the duck coop (using the wife's tool shop right now), the size shape and equipment for a brooder, and what hatchery I'll buy. The only decision...

Is there a cleaner way to kill a duck???

I've been watching videos on killing and butchering a duck for meat. Most take it to a chopping block, chop off the head, and let it flop around spewing blood everywhere until it finally dies. My thoughts on that is, now the ground is blood soaked....Wouldn't that be a dinner bell for...

    Texas duck family

Hi folks. Yeah, I'm new to the forum and new to the world of breeders. I live just south of San Antonio in cattle country, but cattle ranching just isn't for me. I was looking for ways to supplement my Social Security income, decrease the food budget, and eat a little healthier. I looked...
