Were all of your eggs bad that sat out through the colder temps?
I found a nest of some of my free range hens that I know sat out through a night or two of freezing temps before I found them.
They should be fertile and are in the incubator now but only on day 2. Still wondering if any will be...
Ideally, I would, but these Game hens run free range, and finding the nests is not always the easiest. I just happend to find them and would like to get a hatch but didn’t know if it was a lost cause. I do have an incubator ready to go.
Have had a couple nights dip just below freezing with a...
I found a nest of 12 of my Game hen eggs that I would like to incubate. I know they are fertile and fairly fresh within a week or two of being laid. We have had a couple nights that have gotten down to around 28-30F degrees with in the last week. Any chance they are still good sitting out in the...
I have a Black Breasted Red male with Black Breasted Red females and Brown Red females. Should it be easy to tell the chicks apart?
I know the pure Black Breasted Red chicks will be the wild type brown/striped. Should the crossed chicks be all black like the Brown Red chicks were?
I guess I’m...
Just looking at the grow outs tonight (they are all around 8-10 weeks)... it does seem hard to believe the OEG bantam males will have an easy time with the standard size females. They are so much smaller right now (they are a couple weeks younger as well though).
They are all hatchery birds...
My other ideas for possible crosses were -
OEG LF X Leghorns:
I think this could tone down the gameness and keep the predator resistance. My concern is the Leghorn could hurt the broodiness of the cross?
OEG LF X Welsummer:
I know Welsummer are supposed to be good free rangers, but I know...
I'm aware of the fact that I am going to have losses to predators. I know that is inevitable.
My hope is just to get a population going that can somewhat self sustain. I plan on keeping a penned "breeding group" to keep replacements available.
Are you putting the OEG Bantam males over JF Hens, or JF Males over the OEG bantam hens?
I was planning to use the Bantam males over the large fowl hens.
I have had OEG bantams in the past and never had an issue with the males fighting. Normal hierarchy squabbles here and there yes.. but nothing like I have seen standard games fight with no intent of ever stopping.
The point of my question is this:
I purchased these birds as I want to eventually have a flock that is exclusively free range.
I know the Games are good options for free ranging. Issues I am seeing are that the OEG Bantams are quite small...which makes them quick and nimble, but I feel makes...
I understand that genetically any bantam and standard are compatible to reproduce.
Your response of:
"Bantam males might miss the mark on large females, but large males may harm bantam females"
This is kind of the point of my question... Are OEG Standard and Bantams close enough in size for...
I will be growing out a mixed group of Old English Game Standard Fowl and OEG Bantams. Just curious if the Standards and Bantams will be able to cross breed or if there is too much of a size difference for successful mating?
If I WANTED to try for the best fertility rates crossing the two...
So you think the combs/wattles are a more sure sign than the fact that the last 4 have been slower feathering and look more like the "for sure" cockerel as far as slower feathering and shorter stubby tails? The first two are just much "fuller" feathered than the other 5 at this point.
At 4 weeks old, which do you think is a more sure sign of sexing Buff Orpingtons: Comb/wattle development or amount of feathering?
Here's my dilemma...
I got seven St. Run Buff Orpingtons from a hardware store when they were 3 days old. I tried my best attempt at "feather sexing" their wings...
