My pair of pilgrim geese have just started hatching their first batch of eggs. Initially the goose laid 5 eggs but something got into the coop (we suspect a raccoon) and ate 4 of the eggs. We reinforced the coop and have made it as predator proof as possible (knock on wood) and she laid 5 more...
Sorry, should have clarified, these guys are a pretty small bantam breed so even at 4 weeks they are tiny. I tried larger boxes for a few years when I first started but for some reason this breed of chicks can be pretty silly and I find they tend to get lost in the bigger boxes which then causes...
I'll add pictures as soon as I get home. Each hen has her own brooder which are each 3 foot by 3 foot. The brooders are basically solid wood boxes with wire tops. Feeders and waters are the normal quart size plastic ones. One other thing to note, the chick won't stop pecking her legs and other...
Nope, nothing been changed recently at all. Heat lamps, bedding, food, etc is the same it has been since they hatched. It has been super wet recently, rained pretty much every day this week but the chicks are in a brooder in the barn so they haven't been getting wet. However, both hens do have a...
I have two batches of chicks hatched by two different hens in the same week. They are now four weeks old and have been doing great. Eating well, strong, happy and overall healthy.
However, yesterday I found a chick from one hen laying in the corner, cold, empty crop, breathing really hard and...
Just a quick update for anyone who's curious.
She's doing great now. She can stand and walk out of her box and back. She's still a bit wobbly but much better than before. We're still giving her extra vitamins as well as yogurt, scrambled eggs and oatmeal. She pooping normally. She's talking a...
Has anyone ever had a chicken not able to stand if she gets something caught in her throat? She recently got into our goat pellets so I'm thinking she may have gotten some stuck in her throat but I'm not sure why that would make it so that she can't stand.
Yeah she was a very persistent broody and it was difficult to get her to take care of herself so i suspect she didn't eat or drink enough. After the eggs hatched I figured she would take better care of herself but thinking back she was probably still not drinking/eating enough. She also stayed...
She's now eating and drinking a little bit but I have to hold the dish up to her while she eats. What I'm hoping is that she's just drained after being broody for the first time and being so old but I suppose time will tell. I gave her vitamins and will give her more supplements. She pooped a...
Yes i suspect that could be the case but, aside from the issues i mentioned before, she doesn't appear unhealthy in any other way. Her feathers look great, she's very talkative and she acts as young as the chicks she hatched.
Not sure of her exact age but she's between 6 and 8 years. I've checked inside her beak and saw no signs of anything wrong.
Her crop is very empty because she wasn't able to get to her food. She's not interested in drinking and she'll fight me a lot when i syringe it but she can swallow it...
I've got a chicken who's acting like she's sick. A couple of months ago she hatched a batch of eggs and has been fine since. She's always been a very healthy bird and had never acted sick in any way. However, i recently noticed that she wasn't walking around as much and she's started to kind of...
