Here is a random question! So we processed our male ducks and male turkey not too long ago, but we just found our female turkey started another nest and I found a muscovy hen sitting on a clutch. How long after the males are gone can the eggs still be fertilized? I know the surest way to know...
Update: we just spotted a black spot on the wing of one of the poults - apologies the picture is terrible, the mama was taking them into the brush when we saw it so we didn't get a great view. Also here is today's photo of the black mark on the female :(
Thank you all for the info! This has been very helpful to consider other options it could be. Our turkey’s spot seems darker than the ones in that picture. I haven’t tried dabbing it with a cloth or napkin, that is a good idea - though I doubt she’ll let me close enough right now! We will keep...
Thank you for the reply! We certainly have many mosquitoes here in NC. If it is caused by mosquitoes and not transmitted through feces, would it still be safe to sell our baby turkeys? We were figuring we need to monitor and hold off on selling any of them until we determine what is going on and...
Good evening,
We just discovered this spot on our turkey - does it look like blackhead disease? We haven't experienced it before, so I don't know much about it. We're especially nervous because we hatched turkey poults about a week ago! :( Any advice is appreciated, thank you!
Yes!! Very good point. We've been trying to catch them to clip their wings and have gotten a few, but they're now very wary when they see the net come out, which makes it even harder. Our own fault - should have done it when they were younger! Now we know :(
Oh thanks! I didn’t realize there is also a disposal fee. I don’t think the $50 is worth it to us... We will just have to wait and see if it happens to any of our other ducks in the meantime. Thank you so much for the information though, that is really useful and good to know.
Thank you! I was just wondering about whether I would need to freeze or how to save it. Is it pricey to get the necropsy done? We’re not commercial duck owners here, just backyard duck owners.
Thanks for the info!!
Thanks, that would be helpful! We are in North Carolina. It would be helpful to know what killed her so we know if it’s safe to sell or kill/eat our other ducks, or whether I should expect them to start keeling over next :(
Anyone have any clues what could have happened to my Muscovy hen?? 5 months old and this morning we found her lying on the ground unable to fly or use her legs, just flopping around. My husband saw her first, said she was lying on her back as if the back half of her body was paralyzed and...
