    Is a closed run necessary?

After reading the comments, you've got some good advice here. Hope you listen to your fellow chicken lovers: no automatic door, covered run, and someone to check on them daily. With that said, you can only do so much based on other commitments. The best you can do is make sure they are secure...

    I need to vent...

Oh you're fun!!! It sounds like your critters have you in the plam of their paw and loving it. LOLOLOL After reading the comments above, you've been given some sound advice with the 'leave it', 'birds don't like change', and 'they'll figure it out'. I would only add to work with one dog at a...

    Keeping a dust bath dry?!

I sprinkle DE around the floor of their coop so they can bathe in it.

    Who uses DE(diatomaceous earth)

I swear by DE but am aware of DE dust being inhaled. So be careful. I use it as a supplement and do deworm everyone with appropriate chemical dewormer on a regular basis. I haven't used it in my garden yet because of the pollinators, don't want to kill them. About my chickens: I sprinkle it in...

    Keeping a dust bath dry?!

How about using a kitty litter box that has a top on it. It might be a bit small but that depends on the size of your birds. I have dirt in my coop so they bathe in their coop.

Can I feed my chicken just whole corn.

    Backyard Pole Light

We had our pole light turned off because it announced our presence to potential burglers. It's DARK our here now and we love it. If I remember correctly, it wasn't all that bight anyway. Based on what our pole light looked like, I don't believe it should bother your chickens if they have a solid...

    Rats, rats EVERYWHERE! ☹️

I take up the chicken food at night. That stopped my mice problem. (for now that is). All our chicken feed is stored in metal trash cans 'cause mice eat through plastic. Guineas kill snakes who, in turn, eat mice so I don't recommend guineas. We encourage black snakes out here. Looks like the...

Predator took all 5 hens last night! I feel horrible!

Like every one has said, don't beat yourself up over this. Life happens, dinner out, evening meetings, forgetfullness. I've lost birds because I forgot to close their door, too. The important this is to learn from their deaths. Ask yourself, What can you do that will help you remember? Get an...

I took everyone's advice. Criminal rooster is gone gone. Wonder Spouse dispatched him about a week ago. My index finger is finally back to normal (I can write checks again -- Whew! imagine a woman unable to write checks!!! Lost my super power for about a week. NOW I enjoy caring for the ladies...

At long last -- an Introduction
