Has your flock gotten you sick?

Has anyone gotten ill from their backyard flock? I’ve had hens for 5 years now. My 7 year old son became ill about 1.5 weeks ago and tested positive for Astrovirus, campylobacter, and EPEC (e.coli). Having contact with chickens is listed as a possible source for 2 of these illnesses. Now he...

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

The hen in the thread is still getting calcium, one Tums, once a day. I ran out so just grabbed Calcium tablets with D3. I haven’t looked up how much to give her yet. I’d love any input you have. She is moving better today but still in penguin stance when standing. She still has diarrhea...

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

The hen in the thread is doing slightly better. Based on what everyone has said and everything I have read, it doesn't sound like she is contagious, so I let her go back with her flock today. I'm trying Monistat orally just because it's the last thing I haven't tried, she is on day two with...

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

I just found a different hen dead in the run. She was stretched out on her stomach. She was acting fine yesterday. She also had some blood on her lower abdomen but I believe one of the girls started pecking at her. Am I in big trouble here with one hen ill and another that appears to have...

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

Great! I will give her that and not worry about putting Vaseline on a chicken. Could this all be caused by a crop issue? The lump I’m feeling I think is too far down to be her crop but I’m not exactly sure where that part of her body is located. This is why I’m thinking egg.

Would a crushed up Tums work? It’s what I have on hand and could give her right away

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

I used a small amount of ivermectin on the back of her neck and covered her legs in Vaseline. I have checked head to toe for mites and can’t find anything. But the scales on her legs were raised so I do think that is part of the problem.

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

The bloating has gone down since the start of this week. There is a hard lump(I’m pointing to in in one of the pictures) Her stomach and area below the vent are firm but not hard. I think it has been about 1.5 weeks since her last egg.

Help! Hen is still sick and I’m out of ideas!

My 3 yr old hen has been I’ll for the past week. She was barely moving, walking like a penguin. So I brought her inside and gave her an epsom salt soak. No egg. Then noticed she has horrible smelling poops and keeps getting it all over her butt. I couldn’t find a vet to see her so I got advice...

Is my hen still ill or is she recovering?

4 days ago I found my 3 year old hen laying by her waterer. She started walking very slowly, like a penguin, tail down, stomach swollen. Her butt was covered in white/yellow slimy stinky poo and just seemed like she was fading fast. I brought her inside and proceeded to google what could be...

Chicken Drama and bullying please help!

Thank you everyone for the kind replies. I was worried that I did something wrong and failed chicken raising 101. Question - how does one re home a chicken? Where do you start? My daughter is so attached and this will be hard but I agree with what others said about there needs to be peace.

Chicken Drama and bullying please help!

I am at my wits end with my chicken! I have 4 hens that are 1 year and 2 months old. I got all 4 of them together at 2 weeks old. I am having serious bullying of 1 hen. It started with the top hen pecking at her. I’ve tried separating, adding toys/things to peck at, pinless peepers, letting...

A bully hen or normal pecking?

Today the pecking has happened while they free range in the yard. The “offender” (Peepers)will just walk over and peck at the smallest one. The dust bath was one location. After Peeper was done with her bath the smallest one took her turn. Peepers just went over, pecked at the face once then...
