Thanks for the info--I'm always so impressed with the depth of knowledge in this forum! I had never known about Splashes before, so this is very intriguing.
Hi! He came as an unsolicited "extra" with our order from Murray McMurray. I attached another photo from today which is hopefully helpful to you. His feet are bluish, and the soles are grey. Comb and wattles are turning red now. White earlobes.
Hi everyone,
I have an 11 week old cockerel, though the photos I am posting are most likely from week 6 or 7. Any ideas what he is? (other than stinking cute). The last photo was taken today, so about 11 weeks old.
thanks in advance!
Thank you for this post; I’ve been using the water I rinse out my starter container each feeding and adding it to my fermenting vessel, and even that little bit of starter in the water seems to boost the fermentation of my feed—it definitely looks different and fluffier when I do that.
Agree with all that's been said before, adding that occasionally with four nest boxes for 16 hens, I have found an egg in the coop, and once or twice an egg outside in the run. No harm done, though--so if they really need to lay, they will lay wherever! However that was pretty rare (handful of...
Chickens will follow the path of least resistance when given the choice of nipple waterer or open body of water. I think it's instinctive--if one method requires (even slightly) more energy, it's going to be second best.
They will thrive with either method, but if you offer both, they will...
I agree with EggSighted4Life, the color is dependent on greens in the diet. I remember from older threads about yolk color that some people hydrate alfalfa pellets and offer them as a mash to also help keep yolk color up especially if free ranging is limited or in winter when there are fewer...
Your chicks can consume specially sized chick grit at this point. I hear it’s best to offer a finite amount because they sometimes mistake it as food and eat too much, but they definitely need some grit if you are going to feed treats (anything other than chicken specific feed.)
I've used the Rent A Coop brand, and of 8 nipples installed, one of them started leaking after a few months, but that could have been an issue with particles being stuck in the gasket. Nonetheless, their customer service is excellent as they sent me several replacement nipples and gaskets for...
I’ve had week old chicks accept nipples readily I did start them on a drip nipple similar to vertical nipples because that is so much easier to push and after another week or two I transitioned to the horizontal push type nipple. I waited until they seems strong enough to push the button easily.
I used crumbles for a few years and thought pellets were strange, but after trying pellets I now prefer them. They are less easily displaced as the hens eat because of their greater weight, and they tend to have less waste in the form of feed “dust” that the hens can’t pick up. Also, the...
Absolutely amazing. I’ve gained a lot of respect for birds in general as I’ve come to know more about chickens. The raptors in particular seem to be so adaptive and able to improvise as conditions dictate. Great video.
This is such a relaxing photo, but I have to confess when I first saw it I thought they were doing laps, cross country style on doctor’s recommendation. :D
