I know it's probably too early....

Here "he" is at 5 weeks old. Very unhappy at being picked up. Keeping in mind the hatch date was May 26th. So, 5 weeks and 2 days ago.

    Welcome to the backyard chat!

One more hatched a few hours later. So I have a hen raising 4 chicks right now. I really enjoy my birds.

    Genetics Calculator Chat Thread

Why impossible in Wisconsin? I remember a northern lights display when I was in Illinois. I would be inclined to say rare is more likely. Granted it wasn't much of a display considering how close I was to Chicago.

    June hatch-a-long!

I really don't have any answers for you about what she will do to the others. As for the no incubator thing. Do you have something like a small box? If you have that and some way to keep the heat around 101 degrees Fahrenheit in that space then you have a good start on making one. All you...

    June hatch-a-long!

@Lifeiseasy I hope your chicks are okay after yesterday. My power is out, but it is 80F outside which means things won't cool down very fast. I am glad for that with an incubator that still has eggs in it. And 3 recently hatched chicks.

    Arkansas folks speak up.........

So sorry for your loss and thank you for the heads up. Is this the one that seems like or causes liver failure? Or is that yet another tick borne illness for cats?

    Housing goats and chickens together

Just an observation here. If you were to go the route of housing goats and chickens together... they would likely need an integration period. My goats and chickens share a fence line. This morning the goats ran in panic when the chickens approached. Then of course the chickens panicked and...

    First timer, any tips?

I think we all end up doing things like that. The more you handle eggs the more likely an accident like this can happen.

BYC Genetic/Breed Calculator Huge Task Ahead!

I have been reading along, or maybe scanning is a better word.... I will be more than happy to share pictures of my Welsummers when this project is to that stage. Anyway, @Rose Quartz I thought I would share this. These are from my Welsummer. The egg below is from the same bird about...

A concerned Owner -incubating eggs day 18

Hi and welcome, There is a thread on candling in the learning center. Perhaps the photos there would be helpful. As in comparing what you see with the ones in that thread. Please remember 18 days is just the average. I wish I had better answers for you,

Can a single hen integrate with a group of chicks?

Hi and welcome, It sounds like you are doing what you can with what you have. Having a rooster may prove to be a good thing if you do go back to free range. Some roosters are excellent at sounding a warning of predators.
