I have checked for lice/mites. I didn't notice anything, but I didnt exactly know what I was looking for either... didn't notice anything but bare skin and broken feathers. I noticed she is sitting in the nest box a bit, but she's not staying in there all the time. She comes out to visit us...
Hi there,
Noticed one of my RIRs is losing some feathers. She's ruffling herself a lot, and a few feathers are sticking out in odd directions. When you look closely, though, she's missing most of the feathers from her belly. The feathers that are there are broken off short. Some of the area...
Don't hinge your service door on the top... I did a miscut that made me have to do it that way, and it's the first thing being changed when the snow melts...
For routine things like filling the waterer, I just crawl in through the pop-door... it's easier than opening the service door! GRAWR!
I used untreated lumber so I painted everything. Primer only on the inside, with a top coat on the outside (and roof) It's only a few months old now, but so far so good.
In hind-sight I probably should have used treated lumber, would have ended up cheaper I think
Yup, SE wisconsin here and we were dumped on. My chicks got soaked in the wet snow before I got home from school to close them in (the wind was coming from the east! Nature always thwarts my plans!) so I stayed up all night worrying about them and checking on them every so often. At about...
The day after I posted earlier, (ie yesterday) I got two eggs. I did today too! Looks like she's finally laying!
The other two non-layers have showed very visible comb growth over the last two days too, so maybe it's almost time for them too! Soon I will have eggs coming out of my ears!
Of my four, only one is laying right now. I can tell that she's more physically developed than the other three, but one is so close I am surprised she is not laying yet. The other two seem to still be small, with short combs and such. Not sure, they're about 7 months old now.
As per the recommendation of much of my reading, I have more of a "nest shelf", it's just a shelf with an edge on it. I have wood chips up there just like the rest of the coop. I probably wouldn't do the shelf again, in favor of a more "cozy" nesting box.
I think I just threw 4 golf balls...
We had an 2 degree windchill the other night and I couldn't sleep. My coop has the down-wind side of one wall about half open window. I leaned a piece of hardboard against the windows and closed the front door and checked on them a few times over night. I ended up sitting in their pop door...
I got one in the nest box yesterday! I didn't get a chance to check this morning because I was in a hurry and didn't have a flashlight (it was still dark), but someone else should have checked by now so I will find out when I get home . Hopefully she will make it a regular habit and I wont...
Hi everyone,
It's starting to get cold here, and it's time to close up the windows of my coop. Currently they are just chicken wire windows. Should I cover them in plastic? Is that enough? What would you recommend?
We've been graced with 45-50 degree days for now. The chickens are fine...
Hi everyone,
My name's Lea and I am finally posting here!
The reason is to celebrate!
It's been a long journey, difficult at times. I started this spring with 6 chicks. We reared them in a bin with a screen over the top and a heat lamp. We were planning on building their coop as they grew...
