    overgrown claws and beaks

I have dog claw clippers and there is a little grinding attachment, but I think they're going to need the clippers rather than grinding. Sounds similar to clipping the dogs' claws, so I should be able to manage that. I'll try and get photos tomorrow, they've all gone to bed now!

    overgrown claws and beaks

I have just (this evening!) inherited 18 bantams of various breeds, from a man whose father kept them, then died. He has not been very interested in them (since August, when his Dad died) but has continued to feed them. They were kept inside a small shed, in cages of two or three at a time. I...

    waddling, squidgy tummy hen

One of my rescue hens, I guess about 2 -3 years old (had her 8 months) is finding it difficult to walk, waddling like a duck, using her wings as stabilisers. Her abdomen is large and squishy. Very messy bottom. I've brought her in and sat her in a sink of warm water and washed her rear end...

Vomiting hen recovered - now a new problem!

Sorry I missed your reply - yes I wondered too if she'd just got to the end of the road. Anyway, she spent the night in the kitchen in a large box, then I moved her to the dog basket because I was worried she would hurt her wings on the sides of the box with the flapping spasms she was getting...

Vomiting hen recovered - now a new problem!

Well, in the end I took the vomiting hen to our local small animal vet, where I take the dogs, as they also do some farm animals. Vet examined her, stethoscoped her, took her temperature etc. Didn't think it was sour crop. Told me it could be a blockage (eg perhaps a tumour?) and to make sure...

    Can hens vomit??

One of my ladees stayed in bed this morning, so I went to get her; picked her up and watery stuff came out of her beak. She carried on dispensing this while I took her into the kitchen to give her some NutriDrops. She took the drops OK, but then dribbled some of it out. So I massaged the...

    broken claw

Having lost Jennifer-hen earlier this week to something undiagnosed, I hope I'm not starting a disaster week . One of my remaining four ladees, who doesn't have a name as she is so like 2 of the others I call them musketeer-ettes, had forayed into the kitchen thro the back door, and was just...

    Low slung ladee

Thankyou Flockwatcher - I think you were probably right about something internal going on. Sadly Jennifer-hen died overnight. I had come back quite late from being out all day and all the others had gone up the stairs to roost, but Jennifer-hen was sitting at the bottom, so I brought her in to...

    Low slung ladee

Thanks for welcomes! 1muttsfan - I've now posted in the diseases bit, so hopefully will get some responses drumstick diva - have wormed and deloused fairly regularly since I got the Ladees, but spring is here (living in England, "spring" is a bit of a joke at the moment), so may be time to do...

    Low slung ladee

Already posted this in New Members section - senior moment, but I am a new member so it seemed to make sense! Any ideas please? The Ladee in question also has a very mucky bum. My kids bought me 6 ex caged hens for my sixtieth birthday, 2 years ago. We've had a few losses, mainly when the...

    Low slung ladee

My kids bought me 6 ex caged hens for my sixtieth birthday, 2 years ago. We've had a few losses, mainly when the ladees have just looked ill, then laid down and died, and I have had some replacement ladees, this time ex "free range" (huh - they were in a far worse state than the caged ones...
