    Coughing

Thank you. Up until today we were VERY dry and dusty. In the throes of a wicked Nor'easter tonight but it has been the driest Spring I can remember. Your idea certainly makes sense to me now that I think about it... Man, I hope you are right!- I will sleep better.

    Coughing

Hi All, My question is this- is it ever ill advised to consume the eggs if the hens are less then well??? I have done a large amount of online research and it would seem a few of my girls have a mild respiratory ailment. Just a small, infrequent cough. NO other symptoms. NO discharge. NO...

    Suppliers?

Hi All, I usually get my chicks through my local feed store as that practice enables me to try different breeds but not at 25 peeps at a time!...just off the phone with them and it seems that all of their normal sources are sold out until April! Been awhile since I ordered direct to my house...

dumb question about a broody hen

Someone here once suggested I freeze a bowl of water, pop thatslab of ice out of the bowl and put it under a broody hen I needed to STOP being broody. I think I only needed to repeat that process 2 or 3 x and it did the trick!

    dumb human mistake- need advice

THis hen is quite loud when disturbed but does NOT peck me. And, I have some hens that will draw blood even NOT broddy! So, I appreciate her gentle nature. It all depends on the hen.- Wear gloves. I don't keep a rooster but when she showed signs of REALLY sitting tight I borrowed a rooster and...

    dumb human mistake- need advice

I have 9 eggs under a broody hen- tomorrow is day 21. I lift her up once a day to 'check'- you know, no broken eggs, no hen poop...today, when I lifted her for a second-one of the eggs rolled away , hit the side of the coop and cracked. a teeny crack.....is there anything I should do...

    So, I borrowed a rooster....

Thanks. I do know all of that. The roo is from my good friend and next door neighbor. We are confident that all birds are (very) healthy. I would never expose my flock to any questionable bird. I am hoping to have 2 or 3 fertile eggs for this broody girl by this time next week.

    So, I borrowed a rooster....

Found it ( about the only benefit to having night owl teen agers who woke me up 500X until I finally decided to get up and do some research): here's the bit I needed to know: ************ Once sperm has been transferred, they swim along the mucous lining of the oviduct until they reach the...

    So, I borrowed a rooster....

Thanks. I am really just hoping that someone can give me a ball park figure about when the eggs might be fertile. I have to give the rooster back in about a week and I only put 6 hens in there with him- and they are my older girls - good layers, all, but, not every day anymore. So, I can't...
